I dont have crowns, but I do have wisdom teeth. About once every 6 months I get swollen gums and pain so bad that I can't chew.

The best thing that takes away the pain for me is rinsing with warm water and baking soda, then I take about 3 or 4 ibuprofen. Another thing to remember is to use Listerine Antiseptic. Remember, it is extremely important to use the antiseptic!

Gotta love not having dental insurance, you try just about everything

Never tried clove oil.. but I heard it helps, orajel doesn't do anything. Honestly, the baking soda + ibuprofen does wonders.

Help Please!! HI, I had a root canal and cap put on approx. 5 years ago. have had redness and swelling (no pain) and gum overgrowth (over the tooth) since. had the tooth shaved down and it helped for a short time( a month) until it started up again. what is the problem. tooth is in the front and it looks terrible, almost like one tooth is longer than the other. very ugly. Just got insurance...whats the problem and what type of specialist do I see.
Thanks!

You need a dentist, and possibly an endodontist. As for what's wrong, I have no idea. Maybe it's infected. Haven't you continued with yearly (or twice-yearly) visits to the dentist in the last 5 years? You should seek advice from him/her.

Thank you dental health forum. I am also experiencing a swollen gum on my tooth that has a gold cap. At first I thought it a canker sore but as I massage the area , no bleeding it skin breakage. I put on an oral pain reliever, it helped no more sensitive pain. After that one day and six weeks later. The swollen gum seemingly moved from lower gum line up towards the tip end of the tooth. Yet, on the opposite side of capped tooth, the tongue area, isn't swollen. Also, no red redness at the time.
I am not anticipating the same insurance deductible, because that institution is no longer in Hawaii. And cosmetics wise, too embarrassing to remove and inappropriate because its my bite wings. K.

Buy a dental tartar scraper and scrape gently around the gumline of each tooth, inside and out, and also behind the back teeth. Interdental brushes can go between the crown and the gumline to remove those minute food particles that are being trapped and causing the infection. Oil pulling (swishing 1/2 tsp. of castor or coconut oil in your mouth for 20 minutes and then expelling it in the trash) is also healing and quite beneficial. Good health to you!
