It's atrocious that dentists still use it...just because it's cheaper.
That's not the only reason dentists still use amalgam. I suggest you read a dental materials textbook sometime and not a blog before you make such a blanketed assumption.
Other than that it was pure torture because he believed that if kids didn't get a pain killer and had to experience real pain, they'd take better care of their teeth. Idiot.
Oh yes. No novacaine as he filled cavities and even pulled one of my "not loose" baby teeth.
I remember some of my childhood friends growing up with an absolute terror their dentists. Ours seemed to be an exception. Pleasant, gentle but did what was needed, put us at ease, explained what was going on and why. To be fair, I have great teeth so didn't need anything done other than cleanings. One sibling wasn't so lucky but even then wasn't tortured.

SASKATOON, Saskatchewan, Jan. 28 (UPI) -- Older mercury-based dental fillings -- amalgams -- contain a form of mercury that scientists say is unlikely to be toxic, Canadian researchers say.
Graham George of the University of Saskatchewan in Saskatoon and colleagues note that these amalgams have been used by dentists to repair teeth for well over a century.
Dentists (handling this stuff every day) die of the same diseases as everyone else.
