I agree, assuming you're trying to avoid DPS and Denver but still be minutes from the city, the eastern Jeffco suburbs of Wheat Ridge, Lakeside, Edgewater, Mountain View, and northeastern Lakewood are the probably the closest of the inner suburbs to the city proper and downtown. The original city of Englewood near Hampden and Broadway is probably next. These are all good choices, very affordable at the present time

On the other hand, I'm not sure that the respective schools in these suburbs are really that much better than DPS' better offerings. In fact, these suburbs are desirable primarily because of their affordable proximity to still better neighborhoods inside of Denver city limits.

I would recommend you take a look at this website (parent to parent of colorado):

Parent to Parent of Colorado

There is a member here (micktooth) who recommeded it to me and I find it to be very useful... it is for parents of children with disabilities. The members in p2p are very active and helpful.

Your questions are very broad and hard to answer specifically b/c denver is an area of 2.5 million people. Maybe post at p2p some specific questions about schools and from there, focus more on the neighborhoods that would be in close proximity to the schools that seem best for you and your family.

p.s. regarding the thread title, it may limit the responses that you get b/c people will generally only look at the posts that interest them or are about something they know about and want to share info...
