I agree with you. When I first moved here I went to places my neighbors and yelpers raved about and couldn't understand all the hype. There are some good, solid places to eat, but I find that my home city which was much smaller and behind in the times had better options. I've also yet to find good Mexican food here which is perplexing to say the least.

I've read quite a few posts in here...some from the first page and some of the recent ones.

Over 4 years ago now, I still agree with what Vegaspilgrim said below:

There is so much good eating around here. If you live in the city, there have got to be a solid 5 places to eat for whatever food you're looking for. pizza, burgers, chinese, mexican, indian, ribs, seafood, etc.

Sorry if you don't agree with me, not looking to pick a fight or anything. But honestly, there's plenty of quality places to eat in and around town.

Couldn't agree more Skins_fan. I've posted countless restaurants (probably 50+) in just the small actual city of Denver itself (excluding surrounding) that are all pretty stellar IMHO. Yes, Denver does lack lots of big chains and more in the fast/casual arena, but for the mom and pops and farm to table, I'm always thoroughly impressed!

Also, come to think of it I think it's also about preference too....my wife and I have discussed this at length and it seems that generally speaking you could divide food liking into two profiles: Rich and savory or clean and crisp. Since we prefer clean and crisp, I feel Denver has soooo much of this but if you come from places with much fuller, richer cuisine, or more ethnic choices, you'll probably prefer that and that is something I don't think Denver has a ton of. Aside from most of Frank Bonano's places, I think Denver restaurants err more on the side of clean and crisp. My .02 and food for thought....ha!

I'd like to find a real, authentic chinese or mexican place in the Denver area. I've been around S. Federal, e & w Colfax. There are far more vietnamese, but the quality (on all of the above) have been very underwhelming (with maybe the exception of Star Kitchen). Let's not even talk about the 'burbs up here. But I guess we aren't taking the 'burbs into consideration, anyhow. The vietnamese has been the best out of those 3 so far. The best mexican I've had here has been Chipotle - but I can get that anywhere?

IMO San Fran, Seattle or Orlando knock Denver's socks off in this regard. I could get better chinese in Raleigh.

If anyone has seen any actual authentic Mexican/Chinese in the metro (or suburbs) I'd like to know!

Gregorio's in Lakewood for authentic Mexican. And unless there is some hyperbole about Chipotle being the best you've had here, you either have horrible taste or have not tried many restaurants.

I've had some of the best buffalo burgers and turkey burgers in CO. For oriental foods, there are certain areas that you need to go to. Havana (South of Mississippi) has a lot of Southeast Asian, Korean, and Japanese restaurants. I've heard the same about the south strip of Federal Boulevard. Parker Rd. has some good Indian and Middle Eastern restaurants. Mexican food is definitely the specialty in Denver. You can go just about anywhere in town to find a good Mexican restaurant. There are some Ethiopian places on Colfax, just east of Colorado. I've never tried them though to know if they are good. And then you have exotic places like Buckhorn Exchange and the Brazilian steakhouses downtown. 16th St. Mall and downtown are mostly chain restaurants, although some are pretty good.

Was so happy I only had to live there for 1 year (aside from the food, I hated the weather and about 70% of the people I came in contact with out there). I'll admit, the only other 2 cities I've lived in before Denver were NYC and New Orleans which are pretty hard to top cuisine wise (heck, I love both those cities [people, culture, activities, diversity, less driving] and while I don't hate Houston as much as I hated living in Denver, I dream of moving back to NOLA)

end rant.
Good for us that you left then. Buh Bye!

Mexican food here is not that good in my humble opinion but I am biased. I grew up in San Diego and I love the hole in the wall taco shops there.

In my experience, preferences for Chinese are as individual as preferences for pizza.
My favorite place for Chinese is Great Wall on E. Colfax and Pennsylvania. They bill themselves as "New York Chinese Food" and it is very much like what I am used to from NYC/North Jersey.
Nothing fancy, just plain old Chinese food priced right.
