According to their ranking of engineering schools (Rankings - Best Engineering Schools - Graduate Schools - Education - US News and World Report), Boulder is 39 and Mines is 63, while Berkeley is 3, San Diego is 13, UCLA is 15, Santa Barbara is 19, Davis is 32 and Irvine is 36.
Rankings change from year to year. If you don't know what goes into making a ranking, you can't trust it.

Ask anyone at Berkeley or Caltech their opinion of Colorado School of Mines and they'll tell you its a world class engineering school.

By the way, years ago I did a summer internship in the Math Department at Berkeley. It was good, but CSM was every bit as good.

Regardless of ranking education is what you are able to make of it. I know people who have gone on to success after graduating from schools like Westwood College and University of Phoenix. However, if the OP intends to go to grad school at a major public institution, he/she may find better options, in-state tuition, and more possibilities in California. In addition, Colorado public universities are in a state of crisis right now with public funding on the verge of disappearing.
You're giving us a lecture about public funding in Colorado while in the same breath recommending California???? Isn't California where they're talking about forcing minimum wage on all state employees?

University California System Funding: Less Can't Masquerade as More | The LA Progressive (http://www.laprogressive.com/political-issues/california-political-issues/university-california-system-funding-less-cant-masquerade-as-more/ - broken link)

"At best, California may soon be left with a university that is public in name only, with most of its budget derived from prohibitively high “market-rate” tuition fees and a deliberate focus on higher paying out-of-state and overseas students at the expense of California’s youth."

"Two new reports on graduate student satisfaction suggest that the University of California's high reputation for its top doctoral programs (http://www.ucop.edu/ucophome/commserv/10nrc.html - broken link) is in jeopardy due to the state's financial problems. A new report issued by the university system shows that graduate students are increasingly unhappy with housing affordability, the financial support provided by the school, and the type and duration of that support."
