Hi all, I'll be visiting the area for a week and thought there can't be a better place to experience outdoor climbing for the 1st time. Would appreciate any suggestions on climbing schools / instruction.

So far I've found only the CO Mtn School, but unfortunately I can't afford $180 for 1 day (). Looking for something closer to $100.

I'm looking specifically for outdoor climbing (not indoor rock wall).

Thanks!

Have you ever been climbing indoors? I wasn't taught in CO how to climb, so I don't know of a school to advise you to go to, but from being taught to climb in the past, you're really going to want to learn to belay someone indoors with a mat under you both. The grips indoors will also be much easier to get the hang of, so you'll know what level you're at when it comes to climbing a crag.

Not saying you should wait until you get to CO to go climbing indoors... More saying that you should start now with indoor rock climbing, then when you're comfortable belaying someone or being belayed, then give outdoors a try. Your hands and potentially broken body parts will thank you for it. ;-)

No. Not necessary. I took a rock climbing class in college years ago and we never did anything indoors. We learned belaying and climbing out in the field.

When I climb the Rockies, I use the pedal on the right.

Colorado Mountain Club has a Basic Rock class starting in September. Just google them and there's a wealth of information.

Of course it's not 'necessary.' Just a bit safer. Were you ever dropped by a newbie on rock when they were learning? 'Cause that sh*t hurts.
