What are the crime problems in Denver, especially the downtown area?

I do not know the stats, but I do know that there are neighborhoods that are safe and those that are extremely dangerous. I say this as I got on the wrong bus--while drunk--and when I realized it and got off I was mugged. This was in an area that would be considered southwest of downtown (along Federal and near 7th).
At the same time, I have been in Lodo and 16th st. Mall area quite a bit at night and never felt scared. Stats are something I have been meaning to ask the police/detective later this week when we meet. If I find a good link I will post it here.
I do want to say, even though I got beat up I still love Denver. I just realized that I have to be careful (aka: don't act stupid by walking along dark streets in neighborhoods I've never been in by myself at midnight on a Saturday...). This is true in almost any city though. My problem was that I'm from Michigan, and since Denver is under more control than Detroit I figured doing almost anything was fine. Not true. Be careful.
Alright, I'll stop talking like my mother.

Extremely dangerous? In Denver? No.

If you are drunk, well maybe. But that is on you.

There's not really anything in downtown that requires any more caution than another downtown. Downtown is (generally) pretty safe. Some of the neighborhoods around downtown aren't the best to walk in after dark, but in day they're fine. Such as LoDo, Capitol Hill, Uptown, certain parts of Five Points, the Highlands, etc. Denver is pretty damn safe for a major city, so it's nothing to be overly concerned about. Though a lot of areas warrant caution. Probably not a great idea to go into Montbello, Park Hill above MLK Blvd (some people say above 26th street, but I think that's overly cautious), The Cole/Clayton/North City Park area (slowly being gentrified though), and some areas of West and Southwest Denver (Lincoln Park, Westwood, Valverde, Sun Valley, West Colfax, Villa Park). Apart from these, I can't think of many "hoods" or problem areas. Be aware that the statistics often misrepresent neighborhoods, so Uptown might be considered dangerous when it really isn't, and North Parkhill might be considered safe, when it isn't.
