I might be moving from Philadelphia to Denver in the coming months, and I was wondering if I could get some help with a few questions. I've done a search on craigslist and I see that most of the rental properties are going for an average of $1500.00 per month. But what will my average grocery bill be ( my kids eat a lot lol)? How are the gas prices? What will my monthly average for utilities be for a family my size?I was looking for more up to date info on the cost of living in Denver. I have 2 children one in middle school and one just beginning High School. I am a single father and my new job will be demanding, so I'll be looking for community support like after school programs; church;etc. I might also need sitter services for the times I need to travel out of town on business. I'm searching the web and getting some good info, but in my experience there is nothing better than conversation with the locals to get solid answers and a real feel for the likely areas that would best meet my needs. Any suggestions?

Start with where is work? What would you like your new community to have?

Boys eat more than girls in high school. Everything depends on what you buy and how you shop and how old the place is and what the thermostat is set on....

I think your grocery bill will be similar to what it is in Phil. If you locate in a community with a lot of kids, you will find a lot of services for kids, including after-school programs. You will also meet people who can keep your kids overnight when you travel. I believe gas prices here are similar to PA's; it's been a while since I've been back there.

My guesstimate is that food and utilities will be comparable to any other city, but I'd expect Denver to be cheaper than Philly.

Gasoline here in COLO SPGS is about $2.75/gallon for regular, though I save 10-20 cents/gallon with my supermarket card.

My utilities on a 3800 sq ft home with two adults, lawn sprinkler, the works, averages $225/month for gas, electric, water, sewer.

Milk is anywhere from $1.98 to 3.50/gallon depending on brand, etc.

IMO these are issues the OP should not worry about beyond this point.

I moved from Phila (Bucks) early last summer. Gas is 15-20 cents/gal cheaper here, similar to NJ. Groceries about about the same with the exception of milk and eggs being significantly cheaper here.
