I've lived for years in Colorado with just a 2WD sedan. Snow tires make a big difference. That said, I have a Forester now and love it. The Forester is a little bit smaller/sportier than the Outback, but other than that they are very similar.

If you have a need for a truck I don't see a reason not to get an F150, but it gets worse gas mileage so I personally don't really see any reason to use that if you don't need it. I also see truck owners fill up their beds with snow all the time to get better traction, which seems like a pain.

There is a difference between 4WD and AWD. The Subaru also doesn't have enough clearance to go on Jeep trails in the mountains. If you're wanting to do that go with something else. For anything in the city, the Subaru is more than adequate.

The Subaru has a winter package with heated windshield wipers and mirrors - this would be worth every cent. I'd rather have heated wipers and mirrors than heated seats.

I see an awful lot of Camrys driving around summer and winter....4wd/awd is rarely a necessity but it can come in handy. I drive a front wheel drive Rav4 with good all season tires. Never had a problem. Personally I love heated seats. That and tinted windows (helps with the hot sun in the summer)....

To be perfectly frank, anything will do here unless you're planning to go off-roading or do a LOT of mountain driving. We moved herein 1980 with a 10 yr old RWD Chevy Camaro and a 2 yr old Ford Fiesta FWD. I was a visiting nurse and usually drove the Fiesta. We didn't get a 4WD car until I was no longer working as a VN. Have taken many different kinds of cars to the mtns. Just bring what you have and when you need a new car, get what meets your needs.
