Hello- I'm flying into Denver Wednesday for a job interview and am looking for cheapish places to stay. I'm particularly interested in places in neighborhoods that are walking friendly. I've heard/read Capital Hill, Washington Park, Five Points etc are the more central/urban areas but haven't found any recommendations for lodging in those areas. I'm coming from SF and would really like to find the Denver equivelent of the Mission District...ten years ago. Thanks!

Anything on East Colfax should meet your needs. Broadway would be another option.

Here are a couple that might work for you. Both are near Downtown and Capital Hill. I'm not recommending either of the them, but you can read the reviews online for yourself.

Econo Lodge Downtown
930 E. Colfax Ave, Denver, CO 80218
(303) 813-8000 ‎
Budget Hotel Rooms, Affordable Hotels Motels - Econo Lodge

Broadway Plaza Motel
1111 Broadway, Denver, CO 80203-2106

Hi XT,

If you want to stay somewhere with a true Denver neighborhood feel, you can get a vacation rental--they are much less generic and often less expensive than a hotel. Here are a couple of listings from VRBO that I thought might fit the bill:

Denver Vacation Rental - VRBO 192705 - 1 BR Denver Metro Condo in CO, Exceptional 1BR/1BA Condo Includes 2 Hybrid Commuter Bikes (http://www.vrbo.com/192705 - broken link)
Denver Vacation Rental - VRBO 194345 - 1 BR Denver Metro Apartment in CO, Hip, Urban Guest House in Historic Neighborhood (http://www.vrbo.com/194345 - broken link)

Have a great visit and break a leg on your interview! ; )

The Broadway Plaza Motel is a serious DUMP. I went there once and believe me you don't want to stay there. It's one rung above a flophouse. The Econo Lodge isn't bad but I'd suggest the Ramada at 1150 E. Colfax just down the street. Not sure what your budget is but it's pretty reasonable and a great location for what you want. It's a little pricier, but the Comfort Inn 401 17th downtown is also a great deal / location. It is attached to the Brown Palace, the best hotel in Denver, so you can enjoy the ambiance without paying for it.

Closer to downtown the 'cheapish' places disappear . As for mission st., I'd say parts of Colfax remind me of that. Colfax did get better in parts (Ansutz Campus) but still has places that need improvements. Mission, from my recollection from few years ago when I was vising family, is not on the 'improvement' track.

2binD- The interview is in Englewood but I rented a car and am staying for a week to check the city out so it's not really an issue. In fact I know the folk who are interviewing me and think it's going to be a pretty low key...I'll probably end up spending an hour at the office, the rest of that afternoon drinking beers w/ the people who just interviewed me and have the rest of my 7 days in Denver to explore.

Everyone else- This is exactly the kinda info I was hoping for.... really awesome stuff. The VRBO units in particular. They actually look almost to good to be true! A little more than I wanted to spend but both in areas I definitley want to check out and still affordable. I'll be calling both of them up tomorrow and set up a couple nights at each. Besides those two the Ramada looks good to balance the $$ I'll (hopefully) be spending on the pricier pads. Of those three which would be the best to spend a weekend night walking around from? I'm guessing anything on Colfax?

Again, thanks for all the good info!

Hi XT,

Glad we could help! : ) Our family always stays in vacation rentals when we travel and we have found that they give us a much better sense of the place we are visiting than a standard hotel/motel. Don't hesitate to ask them for a better deal when you call, especially since you'll be staying for a week. Let us know where you end up!

Figured I'd update for anyone else in a similar position. I ended up spending my first and last night at the Ramada on E Colfax and it served the purpose. Clean, affordable, and centrally located. I decided to splurge on the rental w/ the bikes in Five Points (link below) for a couple nights and ended up staying four nights it was so nice. I piicked that unit over the other one for the cheaper cleaning fee and the bike and was glad I did. I was able to check out the neighborhoods I was interested in (Highlands, Baker, Washington Park etc) on the bike and ended up really liking Five Points. Very recommended.

Good visit and I got the job!

Congratulations on the job!

This is so neat -- I never thought about vacation rentals before, but I'll have to tell my parents for when they visit. I think they would like something like this.
