I see lots of threads about how great Denver is to live in, but people need to be aware of our dark side too. And I know crimes committed by the police is not unique to only Colorado. But this is OUR state. It's embarrasing and I would love to go a full month without hearing about a cop committing a crime. Heck, at this rate, give me a whole day!

When I was growing up, we were taught that the police could be trusted with our lives. They are there to help and protect us when we can't protect ourselves. I know they are just human, but they are held to a higher standard than most because we rely on them so much to do the right thing. I always thought of them as super heros without the capes. People who rely on them the most to be that super hero are showing up in headlines as victims of the police. The elderly, the women and children, and in some cases even animals.

Here's just a small example of police related incidents that made recent headlines:

They beat people within an inch of their lives http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27760608/detail.html On this link, there are at least 16 other links to related stories of recent police brutality.

They file false reports/caught lying http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27516955/detail.html Police brutality on women and then lying about it. They were fired for lying, not the brutality caught on tape.

They kill people and get away with it http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27827427/detail.html Their actions caused this man to die. This was also caught on tape.

They beat up kids http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27854169/detail.html The same officer keeps getting in trouble for punching kids in the face while they are already handcuffed and sitting in his cruiser.

Involved with child porn http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27862082/detail.html He was not only caught with child porn, he also has access to children in the community.

Drove drunk while on duty http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27840007/detail.html This guy was fired, but he's trying to get his job back.

Illegal street racing with kids http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27890776/detail.html WTH?

They kill family pets for no reason at all http://www.thedenverchannel.com/news/27863147/detail.html I'm so mad about this one, I'm beyond words for it.

Thoughts anyone? Do you have your own stories about running into a bad CO cop?
Here is another one for the collection.

It is not just Denver, but is a regional issue. However, the FBI is now looking into whether the Denver situation merits a formal investigation. Both mayoral candidates have promised changes. That said, it is a few bad apples, but the good people on the force need to step up and be vocal that they don't want to be tarnished.

No Criminal Charges Against Officer In Dog Shooting - Denver News Story - KMGH Denver
Here's the conclusion to a Denver cop shooting a non-aggressive dog while the dog was on it's own property because he "thought" the dog "might" attack him. The officer changed his story from the initial report and now he won't face any form of punishment. I hope the dog owner sues the pants off this guy in a civil suit. But we all know how silly that is. She'll be lucky if she gets a $200 settlement for loss of property. Which wouldn't even cover court costs to do so. So sad.

"The dog was unlicensed, off leash and not under control of the owner,"

1. I don't think a law suite would be too successful under those condition. 2. It was an Erie, cop, not a Denver cop. Just sayin.

1. The dog was in it's own yard and witnesses said the dog was not showing any signs of aggression.
2. That entire sentence just described all of my neighbors dogs on our block. I don't think that justifies killing it.

Yes, my bad. I should've said Erie, not Denver. Thank you.

I have read and walked through the DA report several times because I wanted to understand what really happened. And there are several points that are quite different in the newspaper reports versus the official report. Use your judgment but I'm assuming since the dog's owner and the mysterious 3rd witness didn't give official statements its because they didn't want to perjur themselves. The witnesses that say the dog was not being aggressive would not put it in writing. They (as well as the officer) had an interest in the case. The only other witness would not say anything (to avoid lying, to avoid angering their neighbor or for whatever reason we don't know). Anyways, here's a few points that the official report makes that quite change the impression versus that given in the newspaper reports.

1)The dog was not in it's own yard. The officer was walking on the sidewalk toward the house when the dog approached. There was no 'sneaking in through the trees' or anything like the early news reports. The neighbor eyewitness said the same thing.

2)The dog was shot near the neighbor's SUV in the neighbor's driveway not on the dog owner's property. The view of the dog owner and the neighbor witness of the ordeal was blocked so they could not say whether it was being agressive.

3)The neighbor and the dog owner both yelled at the dog and it did not retreat to them. The officer also yelled at the dog to back up before shooting (as the neighbor witness stated).

4)The necropsy shows the bullet trajectory was consistent with a shot as the dog lunged. This disputes the newspaper article that the dog was shot as it ran away.

Looking at the facts, not just the newspaper article it appears the dog was aggressive and the owner and the neighbor (who was at the dog owner's house and knew the dogs name and attempted to give it a voice command) both initially gave statements that attempted to place blame where it didn't belong. The fact that the officer had shot another dog a few years ago (when it was causing serious bodily harm to a child) should not be used to pass judgement on the officer or to place additional scrutiny since that shooting was shown as justified.
