It's not a bad question, but I'm not sure how it would be answered. I mean, the odds of suffering a loss that your renter's insurance would cover are really small. You know this because renter's insurance is cheap. So most people will have no experience with the company except for paying the bill.

So is the best insurance the cheapest you can get form a reputable company with a good rating? That would be my guess. Or is the best determined by something anecdotal, like "my tv was stolen and company A didn't pay, so don't use them"?

I thought this was a pretty intelligent discussion of what to consider.
What are the best renters insurance companies?

Try the company that you have an auto insurance with. The bundling of the two policies will save you money.

We have Amica. They are efficient at signing you up and have good internet account management. I had one incident with my windshield and they were good at handling it - chips are repaired at no cost to you.

But, we've had them only 4 months, so take that into account.

If I lived in a rental of any sort where I was at ground level or below, especially an apartment/condo building, I'd have renters insurance to cover water damage of any sort, like sewer backups, overflowing bathtubs one story up, etc, plus fires caused by doofus neighbors. I'd do the same for a rented TH or SFH if I was at the bottom of a hill and subject to sewer / storm drain backups, not to mention damage to my property from theft or severe storms.

You forget that the big risk is not damage to your possessions but to cover damages to the building and other renters' possessions caused by your own negligence or that of your guest. You start a fire in your apartment, you could be held liable for a considerable amount of damages. The landlord insurance would pay for damages to the building but his insurance would seek recovery of loss from you plus every other renter and their insurance company would come after you.

Your right! It's been so long since we rented that I'd forgotten our old policy included liability and medical coverage for events in our unit.
