Out of curiosity, I did a search and apparently no high schools in DPS have marching bands, from what I can tell. There's some Citywide Marching Band, but it looks very small and they only do parades. Are marching bands not big in Colorado? Or is this just a DPS thing?

I don't know, but I can say that I see a lot of marching bands from the suburban schools in the Parade of Lights every year.

Apparently big enough in Denver metro area. From the Denver Post -

Legacy High (in Broomfield, Adams 12 star district, I think) will be in the Macy's Thanksgiving Parade this year:

This Thanksgiving morning, probably around the time someone is in the kitchen shoving stuffing into a pale uncooked turkey, take a close look at your television.

Because somewhere between the giant airborne Sonic the Hedgehog balloon and Santa's triumphant arrival at Herald Square, in blue and black and practiced precision, will be the Legacy High School Marching Band.

Last spring, Legacy became one of only a handful of Colorado high school bands ever to be invited to participate in the annual Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, which is marking its 85th year.

Arapahoe High School got the honor in 1998 and Broomfield High in 1991.

Apparently it's just a DPS thing. They must have a horrible music programs at the high schools. It looks like the Denver School of the Arts has a strong music program, but they refer students interested in marching band to the Citywide marching band and it looks like a joke.

Very cool! We could hear them practice from our home.

I thought the DPS had a unified band, that is, from all the schools.

In the meatime, kudos to the Centaurus band:

It's sad but true that Denver only has a citywide one. Even very small Sheridan High School has one that marches in the parades around the south side (like Western Welcome Week).

My wife was in the 1998 Arapahoe High School band and marched in the Thanksgiving parade that year. Too bad she couldn't get a recording of it.

Coming from DC and then the south in Carolina, Denver is the first place I've ever lives where high school marching bands ARE NOT a big thing.
