Gang activity in Denver? (fit in, apartment, crime rates)

For specifics, what do you guys think about owning a condo off E Illiff and Havana? I'm a single 23 year old white woman from Westminster and have been given the opportunity to live in one while we're trying to sell it (hopefully 3-5 months). I would love to stay on my track record of never having witnessed any gang activity. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

IMO Havana and Iliff is a nice area. You'll be more than fine.

Havana and Iliff is the middle of a commercial zone with offices, restaurants, car dealers, apartments and even old folks homes and more within very close proximity to the Cherry Creek Resevoir. Why exactly would you think this area has gangs?

denver has gangs just like all major cities and some have more than others. for instance, Los Angeles has an estimated 500 different street gangs with over 60,000 known members. Chicago has over 450 estimated gangs with over 50,000 known members. New York City has an estimated 400 different street gangs with over 60,000 members. However, those are a few of the largest cities in America. Denver has an estimated 110 gangs with over 15,000 known members but it only has 600,000 people in the city and 3 million in the metro area. so yeah its a pretty big city (2nd biggest in the southwest region after phoenix), but not anywhere near as big as chicago, LA, NYC, houston, etc. i'll just give you a list of known street gangs that are based in denver alone.

Of course like every city, Denver has gang members in it from gangs that are based in other cities. Such as, 18st Gang, MS-13, and many different crips, bloods, and sureno gangs that are based in LA. They also have Black P Stones members and many Latin King members in the city. BUt im going to stick with the gangs that originated in Denver and are based in Denver. there are over 110 different gangs based in denver alone, with over 15,000 known members. the bloded gangs are the more prominent and nationally recognized gangs.

Hehe let's not fuel the fear: a lot of those 'gangs' are taggers! Kids with spray paint, not guns. There are gangs in the area, and a few hardcore ones, but that list is very misleading.

Yeah, POCOS PERO LOCOS means FEW BUT CRAZY in spanish to english. It's a north side gang in the north denver area. I got the list from the denver metro gang task force. Also, i've heard estimates from police departments in denver metro that there are anywhere from 110 street gangs in Denver, with 15,000 known members. Some police departments estimate up to 220 gangs with over 20,000 members in recent years. It depends on the source. The amount of gangs in a city usually relies on the population of the city. For example, LA has over 14 million people in their metro area. they also have over 600 gangs with over 60,000 members. Chicago has over 450 gangs with over 50,000 members. NYC has over 400 gangs with over 50,000 members. So yes, denver does not have as many gangs as cities that are bigger, but it does have a lot and it is one of the bigger cities in the USA and the 2nd biggest in the southwest and mountain west, after phoenix. also, approximately 35-40% of the murders in denver per year are gang-related. For comparison, approximately 45% of the murders in LA are gang related.

However, north denver is becoming gentrified in sloan lake, west highland, berkeley, jefferson park, highland most notably but still has a ways to go in some neighborhoods in north denver. upper east denver is trying to gentrify as well in five points, whittier, capitol hill, uptown, north park hill, city park west most notably. but still has a ways to go as well in the other neighborhoods. most areas that are gentrified still have problems but are a little bit better than how they use to be from the late 70's into the early 00's.

So denver is not the worst city by any means but its not the nicest either. Its in the middle as far as big cities go, relatively similar in many ways to albuquerque, but only bigger.
