Hey all. I need feedback on high schools. I live in DPS and have been quite happy with schools thus far. However high school is a different animal. Her top DPS choice is East...but everyone wants to go there and since we aren't in the neighborhood, selection is based on lottery. We toured Littleton High School and loved it but aren't sure because its out-of-district and is further away.

So I would love some feedback for both schools...positive and negative!

Thanks.

I already have looked at every website that rates the schools but I don't think that tells me much other than test scores and since I work in education, I know that scores aren't the whole picture. I'd like to know about the school's culture via personal feedback if that's possible.

Default Personal opinions

My daughter looked at and was accepted at:
Littleton IB
St Mary's
Colorado Academy
Kent

She rejected:
Littleton IB - the kids were way too proud of never sleeping and always working on academic stuff
St Mary's - no boys
Kent - too large a druggie influence

She went to CA and really enjoyed it.
Excellent academics (she went to Columbia for university).
Students are forced to participate in athletics 2/3 of the year. She played volleyball and will tell you that it was a strong positive influence.

My daughter doesn't want to do IB but just do the honors/AP track at Littleton. Any thoughts about the non-IB side? Thanks!

There are other choices you could make as well.

Littleton IB is a very good program, but the regular program is not as good as the regular program that you would find at Heritage or Arapahoe.

If you tell me what her home school would be, I could help you with some other choices.

Thomas Jefferson is our home school (DPS). She's already accepted into the CCT magnet there but of DPS options, has her heart set on East.

Out of district options out southeast are more limited. Cherry Creek HS does not accept out of district choice students (it is "at capacity") and I would not recommend Overland.

Using TJHS as a starting point, I found that it is 8 miles to East High School (and only 6.5 miles to Littleton). The two best non-IB options are:
Arapahoe High School (Excellent) is 7.5 miles away.
Heritage High School (Very Good) is 9.5 miles away.

Dear SC123-We are in the Same exact boat, and I have been researching like mad.
We like Littleton (Honors track looking very good, not set on IB) just fine, and liked the kids the other night. I have a lot of info to share but have never posted on this site, so testing..,.123. Also, Littleton has a new principal, Dr Oakes, who is great. Arapahoe's principal leaving after 27 years. East gone thru many principals...Much more...I went to East, and we live in DPS too, I don't want to "revisit" East.

Great post but posters should know that people from outside Denver (sometimes the United States) read these threads for information, the use of acronyms limits the potential of this great information.

What is ...
DPS
I/B
non-I/B
CCT

Thanks
