Hello All,

In looking for jobs in denver I wanted to ask what kind of salary I should be expecting with the move. I currently live in Connecticut (close to NYC) and make 120k. I have 8 years experience as an accountant and have an MBA in Finance. Any idea what I can expect?

You have to consider the cost of living. I am guessing $120k would translate to $90k to $100k here in Colorado.

There are several cost-of-living calculators online. I ran Stamford/Bridgeport/New Canaan to Denver through 2 different sites and both came back saying the overall cost of living in Denver is about 30% lower than the Stamford/Bridgeport/New Canaan area.

Of course those areas of CT are pretty high-end. Your mileage may vary.

Look it up glassdoor.com and salary.com. Take the average of the salaries you find there and that will give you a good, accurate number.

A cost of living calculator may help you gauge how much it will take to maintain the same lifestyle in another state. However, whether or not you can get that from your employer is a different matter. Wages can be lower if there is more supply than demand for your professional. Sometimes that effect is called the "scenery tax". $120K in CT may only be $80K in CO. Likewise, if you moved to an area that had a shortage of accountants or employers looking for someone with an MBA in Finance, you may get the same pay even though the cost of living in that area is lower.

Yeah that's exactly what I was going to say. You can't expect much different than the market rate for your salary, regardless of the cost of living.

While I don't know for your particular profession, I found the difference between LA and Denver for IT jobs to be remarkably close. Given that LA is known for the high cost of living and generally higher wages, that was a surprise.

I currently live in a lower cost-of-living area, and I'm told by my employer that I may need to take a small pay cut if I want to transfer to Denver since our office there is so popular to transfer to. Cost of living doesn't always translate in salary, it seems.

Based on your experience and education I think Denver is a good choice for you,....... but you didn't ask that, you only asked about salary. In that case, I have to tell you denver is the wrong place for you....

My higher salary friends have told me that they've made less than elsewhere while living out here in their same respective fields...but the trade off is that they are living out here. Anecdotal. Grain of salt required.

I would consider cost of living in Denver to be moderate, however. Not low like Phoenix / Vegas / Houston, but not high like Chicago / San Francisco / Seattle.
