I'm in the latter part of the recruitment and application process for a position that is near Empire, so I will be commuting west into the mountains every day. Will be looking to live somewhere on the west side of Denver if I get the job. Wife and I have done a little bit of window shopping online and were looking in the Golden/Applewood/Lakewood area since it's easy access to the 70 headed into the mountains. What are these areas like? Any areas to stay away from or try to get into? We'll be looking to buy something in the mid 200's, currently looking at listings with a max price of about $260k.

Empire CO? An hour commute each way? Can you tell us why you would consider such torture?

I was up there for an interview on Monday and made the drive, took about 40 minutes each way. Of course, that was during the middle of the day with no traffic. I actually like driving, so it didn't bother me. We have window-shopped in the small towns west of Denver too, like Evergreen and Idaho Springs, but the nicer towns seem really expensive and the older ones seemed....old.

What would happen to your job if you were late?

Are you a live to work kind of person or work to live?

I appreciate your concern but I've already weighed the pros and cons of the position. I'm really just looking for input on the western suburbs of Denver.

Default Location

1. Where will your wife work?

2. Have you looked at: Evergreen or Genesee? Both are closer to Empire (home of Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold) than other Front Range cities/towns.

1. Not sure yet, she has started to apply for jobs up there but has been disqualified from most already because we aren't residents yet. So that's something we'll have to figure out when we get there.

2. I did a quick look and they seemed like they were out of our price range, but it's worth a second look. I've been told that the climate up there is much different (more cold and snow) than down towards Denver. Are they significantly different?

Have you ever lived in a climate that has or driven in snow?

I have not lived in one but I have been skiing in Colorado for 25 years, so I am familiar with it.

I've done some searching through the forums here about Evergreen and it sounds really nice. I did a second look through the realtor.com website and I guess I was wrong about affordability...there are quite a few homes that look decent with some land (we have 3 dogs) in our price range.
