If we live in a apartment in the downtown area, and work towards the east side of Denver, what will traffic be like going back to town during evening commute? Also, if there is an event, like a baseball game, will traffic be a nightmare in and around the downtown area?

Which neighborhood specifically in the downtown "area"? In the central business district, Highlands, and close to the stadiums then yes, it's bad.

If Uptown, South Broadway, Cap Hill, City Park, then no. - as most of the congestion is around the stadiums, I-25, and immediate adjacent neighborhood.

If you're living north, east, or south of Colfax and Broadway - and commuting east, (via 17th/18th, 13th/14th and not I-70) concerts and sporting affects shouldn't affect you.

Will probably need more specifics, but the drive west isn't that bad unless you get the glaring sun. Baseball games usually affect a minor portion of some streets, but I doubt you live near those streets.
