St. Vrain State Park, at I-25 and highway 119. Not terribly scenic, but terrific birding. Closer in, try the south end of Chatfield reservoir.

I was just there this past Saturday. A wonderful lake for a nice stroll with my wife, but unfortunately came away empty as far as bird photography goes. Just a wrong time of the season, I suppose....

There have been good suggestions by many. Yet, many good areas are right here in the metro area. I would suggest Two Ponds National Wildlife Sanctuary in Arvada Two Ponds National Wildlife Refuge Home Page Arvada also has a nature center and much wildlife that are attracted to the Wetlands. at Majestic View Park http://arvada.org/departments-divisi...nter-division/

Another good area that is goes on for many miles is the greenbelt and water resources of Clear Creek. It is heavily wooden in parts and have ponds off the creek that attract birds. Clear Creek Trail, Wheat Ridge, Colorado designated National Recreation Trails You can get to the Greenbelt by many locations in Wheat Ridge. There are two big parks along the south side of West 44th that border the creek: Anderson Park, past Wadsworth and Prospect Park, past Kipling. There is another park that is somewhat hidden along the west side of Wadsworth just south of Hwy. 70, Johnson Park. These parks offer parking. You could also access Clear Creek and the Trail system at numerous points over the many miles that it goes from Golden to where it meets the Platte.

At Between Lowell and Tennyson you will find a State Wildlife Area that borders Clear Creek. It is called Lowell Ponds Lowell Ponds State Wildlife Area | Colorado | Public Lands Information Center | Recreation Search

Another place to look at the birds is along areas of Bear Creek which has from the Platte to the Lake http://www.lakewood.org/bclp/

The South Suburban Park District Maintains a Nature Center along the extensive wetlands that adjoin the Platte and it is a stopping and breeding area for many birds. You can access it easily along Mineral. It is right next to the last light rail station on the Southwest Rail Line so that you can just take the train. It has many trails along the Platte and you can bike or hike all the way to Chatfield Reservoir. Here is a good map of the area http://www.ssprd.org/southsubnew/pag...Pmap110810.pdf

I do not want to leave out a very large area, here in the metro area, that is being renewed from its former past to a nature wildlife sanctuary, The Rocky Mountain Arsenal http://www.fws.gov/rockymountainarsenal/

The Colorado Division of Wildlife maintains information on a website to help you identify birds in our State and points you to the locations where you can find them. http://wildlife.state.co.us/Viewing/...gFeatures.aspx If you look at this website and click on a species, you will see many locations that never come to mind as in the many cemeteries.
