Hi,
I live in Las Vegas, but my elderly parents are in Aurora. I am planning to go out next week for a month to help my mom take care of my dad with Alzheimer's. BUT...I have a Pit Bull. He is just the sweetest boy ever. Non-aggressive and just loves to play. He has no issues with other animals, and has been to the dog park many times with no problems. I also have an American Bulldog that is just a big, loveable marshmallow...afraid of her own shadow, but is often mistaken for a Pitbull. What are the laws about being from out of state with these animals? They are my children, and I would not want anyone to take them away. And I certainly don't want to go to jail if anyone tried ... They go everywhere with me, and are very socialized, well-bahaved dogs. Am I able to keep them at my parents' house in Aurora while I visit? TIA...

You could call the numbers on this page and ask. I suspect the answer will be that they could be impounded and destroyed. Personally I think it is a travesty.

Residents of Aurora are not allowed to keep pit bulls, unless they had the dog prior to the law going into effect, I believe:

But I haven't been able to find anything about visitors. I'm so sorry for the tough situation you find yourself in! I used to volunteer at an animal shelter & never met a pit bull who wasn't a total sweetheart. I truly hope you'll be able to bring your dogs with you.

I agree Mic. It makes me very sad. We have lots of pit bulls in my neighborhood & they're more than welcome as far as I'm concerned.

Thank you all for the responses. I guess I will call the numbers and find out. This is so sad how evil people have done this to these beautiful, magnificent animals. I admit, I was never a fan of pitbulls due to all the false information out there. Now that I have rescued one, he is by far one of the sweetest dogs I have owned. Wish more people can get to experience these gentle-hearted souls...

You're not legally allowed to keep them at your parents in Aurora. Here's the ordinance:

Aurora Colorado. Chapter 14. Animals.

You can transport a Pit Bull through Aurora, but it must be muzzled at all times and either crated or on a 4ft leash under the control of an adult at all times - plus the dog cannot be taken anywhere not related with the move.

That said, if you kept your dog at your parents for the month - didn't take it out - I highly doubt you'd have any issue.

Unfortunately all it takes is one neighbor observing the dog going to the bathroom and the penalty is severe. The dog could lose it's life.

One option is to board them. Maybe you could get them into the prison training program. It is expensive but they would be safe there.
"Another unique aspect of the PTKCP is that we offer boarding-in training to private dog owners. Boarding-in training lasts a minimum of one month. The monthly boarding-in fee is $500.00 for 4 weeks. If you decide you want the dog to stay longer, the cost would then be $50 per week after the first four weeks. We accept most breeds on a first come, first served basis. We have a short waiting list at times. "

I don't know how that compares with regular boarding but I think they would get more attention in the prison program.

Agree 100%!! And good for you for adopting one of them. it makes me very happy to see pits in loving homes.

That's a great idea about the prison training program. My dog came from one of those programs at a women's prison in east Denver. That's not too far from Aurora, you could visit them often. Kind of expensive but at least it's one option.

Oops, sorry, I think pit bulls are also banned in Denver, so that particular prison probably wouldn't work. But there must be other prisons in the area that have the program....
