Does Denver have a service where people hunt apartments for me? Sure, the Internet could be considered one. I've been in Lakewood for some years and feel a tad overwhelmed with tracking down a place.

Apartments.com can be useful...craigslist if you're careful. I found my apartment from some friends that recommended it to me. Maybe ask around with friends and coworkers. It can be a long process.

Tons of rental ads on CL are scams....the scammers pick photo's off of realtor.com or other sites, put an ad on CL with a low price (often a "too good to be true" price) and when you inquire about it, you get back an email with a story about "we owners are out of the country doing missionary work so just wire $xxxx to us in order to get the keys"... or "fill out our form (with all of YOUR critical info, credit card numbers, SSN) and send it to us to get the rental process started." These are typical scams of Nigerian scammers and/or others.
Once you do either of these things you are SCREWED. You need to see the house in person with the owner/agent who has the keys and gets you inside the house, etc, to be sure you're dealing with a legitimate owner. People need to read and heed the warnings on CL.

Craigslist/padmapper is fine, it's how I've found both of my places. Get a feel for prices and you'll spot the obvious stuff. If you see a 1500 sq ft 3br/2ba fully remodeled single family in the Highlands and they're asking $1000/month, it's a scam. If anyone asks for an application with personal info before you can see it, it's a scam.
