Denver is also much less expensive than the West Coast cities, if that's a major consideration. Denver is also centrally located but a far drive from other large cities. Though you can fly all over the country and several international cities from DIA.

And, I will state what everyone here will say: GET A JOB FIRST
I don't agree with this as a blanket observation. It can take significantly more time to try and secure a job from 2000+ miles away depending on your industry and experience.

It is always a better idea to have a job before moving but it can also be very hard to get work without connections and a presence in a particular city. In my industry and many others, people have virtually stopped looking at candidates who aren't already in place and settled. In the past, it was common to fly people in for interviews, put them up for a night, etc. Credit Default Swaps and the subsequent economy and job market have changed all of that.

It very much depends on a person's individual circumstance.

I would choose Denver over Portland.

Good luck, you only live once.

Ive done both and was excited to move to seattle. I came in summer and really loved the place, but the winter is rough. Complaining is a rite of passage. If you have any issues of claustrophobia, the cloud cover can be really low for days and days, even weeks. It can make you feel physically ill.
