I love this map. I show it to my geography students when we study population and migration.

Geography lesson time!

There is an inverse relationship between the number of migrants and the distance moved. Translation: most migrants move only a short distance while a few migrants will move a long distance. The further you are from Colorado, the less likely you are to move here. You are more likely to move close to home.

Check out the map above. It definitely reinforces this. Most movement is between adjacent or nearly adjacent counties. If you click on Denver County, you will find that the greatest number of people who moved to Denver come from Arapahoe County, Jefferson County, and Adams County.

From out of state, the biggest number of migrants come from Los Angeles County, CA, Cook County, IL, Maricopa County, AZ, and Clark County, NV

I'm from California too.

I know plenty of us here, and plenty of native Coloradans.

I moved here from California. My transition was easy because I have always had family here. I have known since I was teenager that I wanted to live out here. Yesterday was my 14th anniversary of moving out here. About a week later the Broncos won their second super bowl. Colorado has become a big melting pot of people from all across the nation. I like it a lot and the diversity makes it a great place to live in my opinion. I know the "natives" are not too happy about it but I don't pay too much attention to them when they complain.

I liked that map too! A couple of points:

I think the OP was implying where do the out-of-staters come from. Local moving is common everywhere.

The map only shows one year at a time. It is different every year. (You can check back to 2005, but year by year.) Some years the Detroit area had a fairly large number of migrants.

Still, the big counties of southern California and Cook Co IL are big every year.

I'm a native and I kind of like the people coming because it creates diversity and its better than having no one live here like Wyoming. What would make it perfect is if more democrats came and less republicans . I've always known that I wanted to move somewhere else like Seattle or maybe somewhere else but I'm still a couple years away from that.

I'm from Virginia and have lots of friends out here that are from VA as well, but I've met people from all over the country. I didn't have any trouble adjusting (aside from drinking more water and using way more lotion from the dry air!) and I've found it pretty easy to make friends here. No one treats transplants any different. I think I'm going to be ready to go back east soon though.

Note that the west, which includes California, is near the bottom of the list.
As a CO native son, my experience has been that most people that have moved here "from California" actually moved to California from somewhere else first. I've run into very few natives of the Golden State, or at least less than I'd expect.
