I'm confused, where did you find asbestos? Did you have some type of popcorn texturing?

Asbestos was used extensively in building supplies from post WW2 to around the early 70s. It was in nearly everything in varying amounts; vinyl tiles, adhesives, sealants, tapes, texture compounds, insulation, window glazing, stucco and cement...

Asbestos was used in gypsum board (AKA Sheetrock) up through the early 80s and joint compound (what the OP is calling "spackling" although that product is only for small repairs) through the late 70s.

theres no prpoblwm witrh asbestos unless it becomes airborne. Don't go cutting into any ways and you will not have any problems
