I will be moving from California to Westminster at the end of April. Of course I will check weather but if there aren't any snowdays does anyone advise not going that route. If there is a snowday or it's not advised then the alternative will be the southern route, I40 East to I25 North.

How big is the truck and how much experience do you have driving a truck of that size in the mountains? Even though I-70 is an interstate highway, there are some tough uphill climbs and some major downhill runs. If you don't know how to use the gears instead of the breaks, then you would be better off going the southern route.

There have been other discussions on this forum regarding the same question. I suggest doing a forum search for some more details on how to handle driving in the mountains.

Thanks I'll do the search. Just to answer the truck size question it is a 16' truck from Penske truck rentals.

If it's snowing in the mountains I would definitely take I-40 to I-25. Even if it wasn't snowing, with a moving truck I would probably still take I-40 to I-25. Keep in mind that you might still run into snow or icy conditions at Flagstaff.

Either way try to get a Diesel truck. The torque of the Diesel will be your friend. I moved with a 26' truck with car trailer from the east cost last year and it was much more a pleasant trip. Plus you end up stopping at truck stops and it is much more easier to get in and out and don't have to worry about getting around cars. There is a reason Peterbuilt doesn't manufacture a gas engine. Ryder is a good choice for rental. If you are looking at U-hall watch their millage rates and overages. They may seam cheaper but in some cases they are not. Ryder maintains their trucks much better than most out there in the rental world.
