I have a dui from 9 years ago, and went to rehab 8 years ago for alcoholism and have been sober ever since, haven't touched one drop, but will these two things keep me from being able to own a gun? Legally of course. I thought rehab for alcoholism was protected under the hipaa laws.

Good job on 8 years of sobriety.

Your DUI was not a felony, but a misdemeanor. Right? If so, you should be fine.

Thank you very much! and yes it was a misdemeanor. The rehab part that shouldn't be a problem either, because it says in the gun laws of colorado something about a history of abusing alcohol, I wasn't sure what they meant by that?

Yea you should be fine, usually the CBI background check only goes back 5-7 years. When you fill out your 4473 form, it asks if you're a habitual user of alcohol, and since that was over 8 years ago and you went through rehab, i think you in good conscience could say no.

In my own experience with regards to abuse of alcohol, it's always the "wreckage of my past" that I notice going forward in sobriety that finally motivates me to seek amendment of the behavior caused by my particular consumption of alcohol.

In other words, its the train engine that kills ya, not the caboose.

I realize this is a purest remark, but there is no constitutional reason why even felons should not have constitutional rights fully restored to them after serving their sentences.

If our penal system worked properly I would completely agree.
