I only found one other hotel in Nebraska that took dogs but they were booked.

For those who made this trip before, I'd love to hear about your experiences and any advice you can give us. But specifically I'd like to hear from those who took the route along I-80 (the one that goes to Nebraska) how you divided up the trip and if you can help us plan distances.

So it's ~1800 miles. We are two drivers so we plan to drive it in 3-4 days but hopefully 3. We want to drive 600 miles a day. What are good places to stop in (we don't care about sight seeing or restaurant, but we do need places with enough lodging so we can choose one that is pet friendly).

What would be a good 'itinerary'

Any advice will be appreciated!
Can't help you from NY to Chicago. But west of Chicago you have two days (if traveling 600 miles per day).
Paxton, NE is about halfway between Chicago and Denver. Why Paxton? Well, see here: Ole's Big Game Steakhouse & Lounge

Good Luck with the drive! Grab some pizza from Denino's as you pull away from S.I. There is no good pizza out here!

Remember your dog will need extra water to cope with the altitude change. Try adding it to their food so your sure they are getting enough. Being on a car trip may be so exciting that they don't drink enough. Plus they will have to get used to drinking more just like you will.

To give you an idea of how things have changed in 31 years ... total trip from Elizabeth, NJ (across from Staten Island) was 1819 miles to Aurora, Colorado. Spent $94.63 on gas. $110.22 on food. $173.74 for motels. For a total of $378.59 ..

Hi everyone

Just to give a quick update from the road we just woke up and gearing up for the last day of our trip!

We drove on I 80 to Ohio but decided to veer South to I 70 and spent the first night as soon as you get into Indiana (700 miles). Ohio is One giant speed trap but it looks like people make up lost time in Indiana :-)

The next day was spent driving past Topeka and we spent the night in Salina KS. So we only have about 4.5 hours to go today!

I can update on the trip costs when I get settled but I definitely recommend driving the extra miles on the first day. Other than that, all is well and we will be setting to our new home later today! Thanks everyone for the tips

Plan it according to La Quinta's en route. Pet friendly with no extra charge. Gotta love it.

Have a safe trip!
