Golden gives this image of a family friendly town. Small population a bit more secluded than other sprawling suburbia's. So why are there so many sex offenders in Golden? Compared to similar small family style towns it seems very high. Please help me understand why.

There are sex offenders everywhere. That's mostly because we are living in a country where relatively minor offenses such as urinating in public can be considered a sex offense.

I've got news for you, you are probably living near a lot more dangerous people then sex offenders. But you will never know, because they are not required to register.

I agree, they are everywhere! They have to live somewhere. And hey, they make good beer there so why not?

Yes I agree they are everywhere and need to go somewhere. But why Golden? Is there a reason or is it just coincidence.

Define "so many"?

And BTW, Golden *is* part of Denver's sprawling suburban mess. It wasn't 25 years ago, but it sold out long ago.

Coloradoalimony thanks for the insight on Golden selling out long ago. Are there any real small towns left in the Denver/Boulder area?

Since your definition is so narrow(20-30,000 people, a "real" downtown, etc.), then in my mind the answer is "no'. All towns within 40 miles of Denver are populated primarily by people who work somewhere else, which is why the traffic is so bad. You not only have people going between Denver and the various suburbs, but you have a lot of suburb to suburb commutes. I work with people in Boulder who live as far away as Castle Rock, Georgetown, Elizabeth, Ft. Morgan, and Cheyenne.

Some would argue that Lafayette/Louisville are "small towns", but they have been compromised in my mind by Boulder to the west, Erie to the east, and Superior and Broomfield to the south. They might be nice suburbs, but they are not "small towns" in my mind.

Berthoud and Loveland fit my definition, but depending on your definition of "the Denver/Boulder area" they might be outside.

If you can work anywhere, why bother with the Front Range? I think the vast majority of people I work with in Boulder would move if we could telecommute, unless we were multi-millionaires and could actually live in Boulder. The vast majority of people working professional jobs in Boulder live somewhere else.

Golden is the county seat for Jefferson County. As such it is the home to the county jail. Many of the inmates are sex offenders who are "living" at the county jail for a year or so while they await trial or while they await sentencing and transfer to . This gives Golden a concentration of registered sex offenders inside of its boundaries.

The C-D page says there are 81 registered sex offenders in Golden. Of those 81 nearly 1/3 of them (28) live on Jefferson County Pkwy -- the address for the jail. About 5 or 6 more do not live in Golden, but in a part of unincorporated Jefferson County that uses a Golden address.

I recently came across a quote from Aaron Levenstein (professor and author) that really puts things like this in perspective.

"Statistics are like a bikini. What they reveal is suggestive, but what they conceal is vital"

Hope this helps.

This was my hypothesis as well. County jails that are located in a smaller municipality can easily skew the statistics. Brighton has a 1/440 ratio.

Hell, just having a county jail in your municipality can skew everything.
