I am visiting Denver in March and I will be renting a car. The thing is rentals in downtown Denver are much cheaper than rentals at the airport ($100+ a week). Is there public transportation from the airport to downtown that is easily accessible by people who don't know the area?

There is RTD's SkyRide which offers direct bus service from DIA to downtown Denver:

RTD

Should provide you with the service you are looking for.

You will not have a problem getting from the airport to downtown by bus. It is easy and takes about 50 minutes. The drop point downtown is on the 16th Street Mall (which has a free shuttle). You will likely be near a downtown rental company. The downtown is easily walkable, and many taxis are just driving around. It will be easy as long as your flight arrives between 8 am and 10:30pm. You may have an outdoor wait between buses since they run at most every 45 minutes. But, you can wait inside since the stop is only about 150 feet from the doors.

The SkyRide bus costs (i think) $11-- have the exact fare ready. The pickup point at the airport is on the east side (where you CAN'T see the mountains) just past all the airport rental shuttles.

Hats off to you for being frugal and not lazy. Be sure to try and find a rental agency within a few blocks of the 16th street mall.

Ask with any questions- I will check back.

PS: The bus makes several stops (and more than 1 downtown). The bus driver will ask which one you'd like to get off at when organizing the luggage. Figure out which one is closest to the rental agency.

The only hard part about Skyride is the bus is once an hour so hope your timing is good.

The RTD schedule/map says DIA West Terminal (Level 5 - Island 5). That would be the side facing the mountains.

Here is the exact schedule for the Route AF. It leaves 50 minutes after every hour from the DIA West Terminal (Level 5 - Island 5). You probably would't make the 10:50 bus, so you would probably be looking at the 11:50. There are other routes to other parts of town, that you could also use. Maybe Route AS to Stapleton. Then take a taxicab to the car rental location.

Route AF: Downtown WEEKDAY, WESTBOUND SCHEDULE

Route AS: Stapleton WEEKDAY, WESTBOUND SCHEDULE

Correct - they recently moved from East to West side due to construction.

Actually they've changed the AF route, eliminating the stops along Colorado Blvd, MLK, and 30th/Downing light rail. It now only stops at the 40th Park and Ride before arriving at Market Street Station. - via I-70 and I-25.

You will have plenty of time to get settled and catch a bus. Check the RTD schedule posted above- be sure you know which bus you will be taking, what the times are, and where it will drop you off. The AF is the one I have always taken to get to the heart of downtown. It's an easy and simple ride.

Do you have a rental agency lined up? If not, try to find one near the 16th Street Mall. Again, the mall has a free shuttle running its whole length. The mall also has numerous places to eat in case you find the airport offerings to be lacking.

I am not sure about the bus pick-up at the airport if construction has relocated it. I am sure you'll figure it out when you arrive one way or the other.
