Hi all,
Just accepted to JWU, and I've decided to attend at the Denver campus. 28, single, moving by myself (besides my cat!). I have been looking around online and in the trusty Apartment Guide, and I just wanted a little clarification. It seems that for a decent apartment, 800/mo seems to be middle of the road, is that right? Also, I am looking at areas surrounding the school, and wondered which areas were safe, and which are kind of sketch. I've only been to Denver once. Aurora seemed okay. What about the surrounding areas? Or should I look directly in the city? I'd like to be close to the light rail, and not too far away from the school. I did see some places near the school that looked a little run down though, so if I have to go out a little farther, no big deal.

JWU is not near light rail at all. The East Rail Line, which will provide rail service to the area, is currently under construction and is scheduled to begin service in 2016.

Safer areas are a little hard to find for $800/month. Check in Stapleton near 26th ave. or near Lowry.

A better option is near downtown by Capitol Hill.

Are Capitol Hill and Stapleton the names of streets or neighborhoods?

Both are neighborhoods.

Stapleton is just north of JWU East of Quebec and centered around 29th Ave. It is a new urbanist community. You will find lots of families there.

Capitol Hill is more of a singles area and it is east of Broadway and south of Colfax. You are more likely to find something in your price range there.

Do people do ANY research before posting here?
Don't answer.
Rhetorical question.

I did. I looked up to see what JWU stands for. At first I was thinking Jorge Washington University...

OP, where are you moving from exactly? My wife and I just moved to Denver last July from Gautier. You will love the basically non-existent humidity and milder temps!

I wouldn't characterize Cap Hill as a singles area. Far from it. It's a very diverse mix of ages and life stages depending on what areas of it you are in. OP, Cap Hill is a neighborhood just southeast of downtown. On the map, borders are Broadway and Downing or so west to east, and Colfax to 6th Ave north to south. Check out padmapper. It has a "neighborhood overlay."

As far as safety for a single female, I would look towards the southern portion of Cap Hill. Especially for someone new and learning the area. Much different than when you start approaching 13th and 14th and getting near Colfax. Unfortunately, that's also where'd you'd typically find the cheaper rents in Cap Hill as a result though. It's scattered though. You could find a small something for $800 in the area.
