Denver Parks and Recreation urged to consider alcohol ban in Washington Park - The Denver Post

Such a terrible idea.

As someone who has lived 4 blocks from the park for over 10 years now, I understand that people get a little bit crazy on the weekends, but the problems could be mostly be addressed with a few more bathrooms and enforcement of existing rules.

Part of the value of this neighborhood is that people want to spend their free time here. For a lot of people some of that is cracking a beer at a BBQ in the Park. Some of my favorite times in the park are summer evening walks enjoying a cold craft beer. The amount of tax revenue alone that liquor sales for Wash Park festivities generate certainly eclipses the cost of an extra cop or two and a few more permanent restrooms.

I've signed the petition below to stop this stupid idea from moving forward. I urge other Denver residents to do the same.

Chris Nevitt is doing this as part of his mayoral campaign.
He is trying to increase his name recognition.
Chris is a Socialist, Union Tool.

I don't think I know any union guys who are against alcohol, this guy must be a loon. My old man was a card carrying railroad boilermaker and blacksmith, hammer and tongs guy, and his nickname among his peers was "rummy." I still have his cards, and I enjoy a wee dram from time to time. Hey, it's time!

I was in a construction trades union for a few decades. I worked around a few thousand craftsmen on power plants, pipelines, pump stations, etc. Heh, I believe a brewsky after work came naturally!

Indeed it did. I recall being in grade school, 7 or 8 years old, and sitting on a bar stool next to my father as he knocked back a shot and a beer after a day's work around the furnaces in the blacksmith shop. My pals from Pittsburgh would tell me how there'd be a row of bars across from the mills and as soon as the whistle blew the guys would go there for a few cold ones.

Nothing wrong with a beer in the park, or a glass of wine; too bad that there is enough boorish behavior going on in Wash Park that Nevitt felt a need to ask for a ban on alcohol. Back in the 1960s in West Baltimore dads would send a ~12-year old son down to the corner bar with a glass jug to get if filled with draft beer, no need to be 21, cops didn't care either, the barkeep knew you and your kids and so did the beat cops. That's the way it was.

I typically don't mind unions or socialists, but if someone is trying to take my beer away I have to draw the line. Chris Nevitt has been a general pain in the ass all around since he got elected.

From what that article says, only 3.2 beer is currently allowed. In other words, (real) beer is already banned.
