I have just found an apartment in Denver from out of state . I found some fantastic one bedroom apartments in that price range in the Arvada area (a nearby "suburb" of Denver). You will also find some great apartments in the Centennial area in that price range. Your question is kind of general - what areas to avoid. One of the things that I did was to use the map that is on this very page and look for income levels and poverty levels to rule out certain areas. Other maps will also give you the crime rates on various places and I found that extremely helpful as well.

I have to say that the best thing that helped me was just to rent a car and drive around different areas. Certain places that I thought were great turned out to be not so great and vice versa. If you two can live in a one-bedroom then PM me and I'll be happy ti turn you on to a small but nice complex that I found that has a vacancy or two left.

Word of advice: on any internet forum you are inevitably going to find some "grumpy" people who rather than actually answering your question will instead tell you why your entire premise is wrong (i.e. don't move - stay away - you'll never find anything). This kind of thing happens anywhere. I found it helpful to ignore such comments and focus instead on the actually helpful ones. You can indeed find a place in that range - be prepared to go to the nearby suburbs like Littleton, Arvada and Centennial which are maybe 10-15 miles away from downtown and about 25-30 mins away (without traffic) .

I found some incredibly nice apartments off Worthington Pkway north of the 70 , from 1/2 a mile away from the freeway to 5-6 miles away. Super nice areas there.

Lots of good information in this thread.

Realistically, Denver just doesn't have the kind of really bad, blighted areas you see in Detroit or Baltimore or places like that.
Some areas have a little more crime or whatever than others. But even the areas that were bad a few years ago -- such as Northeast Park Hill -- are experiencing a big turnaround. The downside of that is that rents and property values are shooting through the roof.

Of course, every person has a different idea of what needs to be avoided. So I think it's a good idea to drive around and look at the crime website. Centennial or Parker or something like that is probably great if you work out in the burbs or don't mind the long commute in. But also remember that much of the crime that used to be in Denver is now in the suburbs.
