My wife, newborn, dog and I are about to move from San Diego to Denver. I have a job lined up in the LoDo area of Denver and have visited CO a couple of times so we are excited for the move. In researching a lot of the urban/metro areas near downtown Denver, we have found that the vibe is not really what we are looking for and would prefer a safer, family oriented area in suburban Denver, commuting into LoDo each day.

With my wife being a stay at home Mom and me traveling 8 weeks out of the year, I want the peace of mind of knowing she is in a quieter, low crime-rated, safer area with other new families around to raise our child. We are looking to rent for a year before exploring the housing market, maximum monthly rent we are looking to spend will be about $1700-$1800.

Does anyone have any good recommendations for an area or areas that might fit our needs? Thanks so much in advance!

Even though the commute won't be the best, I'd take a look at Southeast Aurora or Highlands Ranch.

And Lowry. Really, LoDo is the most versatile location for a job, b/c you can live just about anywhere. Decide how far you want to commute, and draw a circle with that as the radius.

It depends on whether you want a slightly more urban vibe or true suburbia. If you want very family friendly neighborhoods that are still within the city of Denver, then Stapleton or Lowry are great, although I'm not sure if $1800 would get you a single family or even a paired home (side by side duplex) in Stapleton. One thing to pay attention to if you are interested in either of those areas is the specific address. They are both desirable areas and many rental listings will reference one or the other, while really being in the somewhat less desirable area between the two.

Thank you all for the input, Stapleton was actually one of the areas we stumbled across in researching and it looks more like our kind of vibe. I will check out Lowry also. I like the proximity to DIA and the Rapids games too!

To clarify, we are looking at 2BR apartment/condo rentals for the next year, then to use that window of time to explore further and hopefully purchase our first home. It seems there are a lot of new complexes in the Stapleton area, has anyone got any recommendations on complexes they have heard or experienced as good ones?

You might consider Centennial, which is where we are settling in (we also just moved from San Diego with our almost-3-year-old). You can take the light rail right into LoDo, about a half-hour ride during which you can work, read, listen to music or whatever. I work in the Tech Center, and have some coworkers who do the opposite ride on the light rail (live in LoDo, work down here).

Give a holler when you get into town if you want to meet up with some other newly-transplanted San Diegans!

I'd start in the highlands neighborhoods of highland, west highland, sunnyside, berkley...there is a bridge over to the union station light rail stop.

Stay north of the city if you need to drive and get parking. Otherwise stay near a light rail stop.

He said the urban vibe was not what they were looking for.
