I am travelling to Downtown Denver for an event at the Colorado Convention Center and staying at the Crowne Plaza Downtown Denver.

Regarding dinner/ lunches etc, myself and a colleague are thinking of walking to areas such as Larimer Square for dinner. Is it suitable to walk from Crowne Plaza in the evening (roughly 7-8pm)?

Are there areas which we should try to avoid?

Yes, it's perfectly safe at that time of evening with a companion.

You can walk a block to the 16th St. Mall and take the free mall shuttle if you want. There will be a lot of people out and about depending on what's going on downtown.

Seems odd and/or insulting that someone would ask this question.

This is a bustling business and tourist area, lots of people walking around, lots of hotels and restaurants. The New York Times highlighted downtown Denver 2 years ago .

And it's come a long way since then, with the restoration & re-opening of grand Union Station..

I, for one, am tired of this question.
I wear my bullet-proof vest everywhere in Denver and feel quite safe.

Well, a lot of people come from cities where either their downtowns are the type where after the workers leave, the place is abandoned and "scary people" are the only ones to be found in the evening, or the suburban perception is that their downtown is a crime-ridden place to avoid. Very typical in Kansas City where so many people, especially older people, would never go downtown, thinking they'll be robbed or killed.

Not every bustling business and tourist area is safe. As a matter of fact some are pretty unsafe. Thats why they ask.

Atlanta comes to my mind as another example of a Downtown thats not very safe to walk around. Not that it would stop me from doing it, if visited Atlanta. But I'd probably be looking over my shoulder a lot.
