I bought a foreclosure and thus have a lot of remodeling jobs. My experiences with all the listing/lead services (angies and home advisor) have been pretty bad. Lots of spam and calls from the websites and contractors who aren't interested or don't show up for a scheduled estimate. How have gotten remodel jobs completed in the Denver area?

Buying a house and then expecting to contract out all the work isn't a good plan. Anyone that buys houses, fixes them up and resells them for a living, and I have done that for more than a decade, has a full time crew that does most of the work, because dealing with contractors is a giant PITA. It is always bad, but it is even worse in 2014 because there is more demand than supply, so they are even less likely to show up. I am trying to get some concrete refinished, a specialized job that my crew can not do, I have made more than 20 phones calls over the past two weeks, I finally got a quote today that was reasonable, hopefully the guy won't flake. If you want to pay top dollar, there are plenty of contractors that will quote the work, if you don't, then you have to deal with consequences.

Yelp is quite helpful.

AngiesList is supposed to be good, but I think you have to pay for it.

We use Angie's List often and we have never had a problem with them.

My realtor has a list of people she recommends, some of those have worked out well for me.

I have a general contractor friend who helps me match contractors to jobs. DM me and I will put you in touch with him.

I had the same problem when trying to get a contractor to update a bathroom in a house I just bought. My realtor told me to use matchnest.com. They sent someone out to give me an estimate for the work and then put it in this online auction where I got a bunch of bids. It was pretty easy. Another idea is to use nextdoor.com and see if your neighbors have any suggestions. Good Luck!

This is the method I use as well...friends and referrals.

I swear it's 50/50 when it comes to getting a good contractor.
