I have no issues with gay people. Fem/masculine, into sports, interior designer, whatever. I just accept people for who they are. And I don't pretend to be someone I'm not just to please those around me.

I know people rant against stereotypes, but the horrible fact of life is they are born of TRUTH. Most gay men are more effeminate than straight men... and many gay women!

Many gay women - not ALL, folks - look masculine and dress.. well, let's just say "very practically". Unfortunately, cargo shorts on 'thunder thighs' is not attractive to me.

You think YOU don't fit in?

Try being a lesbian in SoFla with a comfortable income, a libertarian-conservative political bent, who loves football, the opera, cooking, game theory, follows economic analysis, thinks most politicians are self-serving ego-maniacs, and, horror of horrors, wears a little make-up, pretty sandals and gets mani-pedis!

Don't laugh, but I am the butch!

Denver has a pretty wide variety of gay. Now that I'm partnered, I'm not much into the scene anymore.

OP, You don't seem to be a huge bar fan, but I'll give you a run down real quick so if you do decide to go, you know where to go and where to avoid:

Charlie's -- Cowboy bar. Mixed gay/lesbian crowd. Two dance floors, one which plays more hip/hop and dance, and pool. A bit scuzzy, but not bad. You can take your straight friends here, as it's not too big of a meat market.

XBar -- Pretentious and full of mostly terrible people. Avoid.

Hamburger Mary's -- chain bar. Bad food. Nothing special for drinks. Some crowd overlap with X-Bar. I'm not a huge fan, but some people love it.

Wrangler -- The "bear" bar. Probably the best and most popular one here. Beer busts on Sundays. Don't take your female friends on weekends.

Eagle -- chain leather/biker bar. According to a friend of mine who moved here from San Diego, ours is about 3X bigger than the one there. The crowd is masculine, but be sure to see what's going on that night before going. Some weekend nights a band is playing and it's just another bar. Some weekend nights they're having a "foam party." Don't take your female friends.

Tracks -- Mostly dance club, near the Eagle. Given your preferences, generally avoid.

Compound -- VERY strong drinks, dance music, the occasional drag show. When it flows (usually on Friday nights) it can be a really great time. Crowd tends to be somewhat older and more alternative than the typical Denver gay bar...whether that's good or bad is up to you.

Barker -- Great jukebox. REALLY shady people. Dogs (as in canines) are welcome.

Broadways -- The Barker. Minus the jukebox. And the dogs. The back patio is nice, though.

BoysTown -- gay strip club. Need I say more?

Lil Devils Lounge -- Mixed gay/lesbian/straight. Good drinks. One of the better places to take a date as it's not as noisy or crazy as most. Nice patio.

Aqua Lounge -- See Lil Devils lounge, delete the patio, add occasional drag queens.

R&R/Black Crown -- Haven't been. Won't comment.

I went to Charlies last weekend for the first time in a long time. On the country western dance floor instead of having country western dancing they'd installed a stage and had strippers.

Sounds like a special event. Or desperation.

I've been to this one. I think this is the place that is an antique shop by day, but a bar by night. When I went, it was a mostly older crowd. Probably not the crowd the OP is looking for.

Thanks for all the info- much appreciated! As you guessed, I'm not a huge bar fan, but there are definitely some nights where I will go out. This is great info! Lil Devils sounds kind of interesting, I like laid back & less crowded.

Has anyone had any luck meeting new friends on Meetup.com?

OP, I find your ad very interesting. When you started with "Please tell me about Denver gay people ..." post, I thought you were about to ask something like Are people friendly? are they acceptive to newcomers or are they cliquish? Are they comfortable with being gay and being themselves?...

By the same token, many guys, despite the polite demeanor, you maintained through answering everyone's post, credit to you, got very offended and snapped back. As far as I can judge, many responders probably grew up being bullying and made fun of being "fem" and many's were even physically abused for the same reason. I can recall a straight neighbor a few decades back calling me "member sucka" in front of my parents, like it was a bad thing :-(. I make fun of if now, but It still hurts. (incidentally, I am a top).

At any rate, I should not judge you for having preferences. But since we started generalizing, it sounds to me like you are a bottom who is not comfortable bottoming:-) If I might analyze this situation here...

Even so, I hope that Denver is liberal enough place where you can become comfortable with your sexuality and will relax enough to pick men who are able to maintain human connection with you, rather than some superficial assumptions about his value as an individual. of course, provided you even want anything of depth with a man.

In other words I have a dream that one day we'll live in a nation of gay and straight people of all colors and sizes, where they will not be judged by the straight people's stale ideals of fem/butch , but by the content of their character.

P.S. Watching Kardashins is soooo shallow. It's all about Housewives of Atlanta!
