And yes, there's an example of when to use "the" in road names here- the Valley Highway.

Most countries I've been in use the definite article when referring to numbered, high-speed, limited access roads. I think the U.S. is mostly just odd with this.

I know California uses the - what about other places here in the US? Do you remember, how about where you grew up (do I recall right, was that Kansas)?

Never drive a car downtown during rush hour.
Never liked Brooklyn's . . . over priced and crowded and food not very good. I usually grab a bar table at the Blue Sky Grill. The pasta and meatless meatballs is very good as is the shaved prime rib sandwich.

Light rail would be good, but after the game could suck waiting for the train especially on nights like last night with sleeting rain and ice.

However, that is a good suggestion.

Thanks!

Glad to hear the perspectives of longer residents. The other day it took me almost an hour to drive from downtown to the airport, and this drove me nuts. Last Thursday at 6am there was a long jam on 25 south leading to downtown for whatever reason. Thankful I don't have to deal with this kind of traffic everyday. And it seems to be getting worse...

No... they don't use "the". It's actually a Southern California-specific thing. L.A. and San Diego. Way back when they first built freeways around L.A., they weren't part of the interstate system and they gave them all names. Like the San Diego Fwy., the San Bernardino Fwy., the Santa Ana Fwy., etc. Then they started numbering them once some of them connected to interstates outside L.A., so the "the" carried over. Plus it's just easier to say when there are so many of them. "Take the 57 to the 91 west to the 405 north".

But why wouldn't you just take the 22?

Every time I hear someone refer to a freeway as a "highway", I just cringe. To me, a highway is like PCH, or two lane, high speed roads in the desert.

Oh, and while I'm at it. No traffic reporter is more annoying to me than that "I'm Susan. That's traffic." woman. Gawd! The way she says, "All These High Ways"... I don't know who gets on my nerves more, her or Tom Shane!
Agree. I cringe when I hear someone say to "Take the thruway" Especially when it's pronounce "TRUway".
