Question re: DMV in Denver & Emissions Testing Info. (Lakewood: living in, club)

From Arvada, which DMV branch is best for obtaining a new driver's license & registering my vehicle?

I'm thinking Broomfield, but I could be wrong...

Also, where is the most convenient place to have my car's emissions testing done? Is this a painful process? I've never had to do it before.

The emissions test is basically, you pull up to a place that looks and works similar to an oil change shop or a car wash, then get out of the car when they ask you, they drive it in and run a bunch of tests (which you can watch), then you pay (cash or check only) for it and they give you a certificate. I believe the amount is $20 or $25. All the emissions testing sites are the same. Diesel vehicles can't use the testing sites, though. Those have to go to mechanics certified for the job, I believe.

interesting question I havent thought of. I have a 1970 Volkswagen, with an original, style/spec, air cooled engine. I browsed the link a previous poster posted, and found I would have to have an emissions test done on it. I wonder if it would pass, and if it didn't, I wonder what I would have to modify to make it pass. I wonder this because a relocation to the denver area is a possibility for my family and I in the not so far future.

Any readers out there with an air cooled VW?

The Headquarters for all this emissions testing is actually in Arvada. It is at the corner of 52nd. and Marshall Street. 52nd is the street that Sam's Club is on, go east from Sam's Club and you will see the entrance before you get to the corner, it is on the south/west corner.See this map Air Care Colorado (http://www.aircarecolorado.com/maps/arvada.htm - broken link)

As far as getting a driver's license, you must go to the Department of Motor Vehicles. That closiest office is the headquarters for the DMV for Colorado. It is in Lakewood, on Pierce. It is not too far where you are living in Old Town. Go Down Wadsworth to 20th, turn east and go to Pierce. You will see the big office for The Dept of Revenue.

I am surprised that there are no more offices in Arvada, there use to be one. Well, I am getting old...

Registering the car is done through the County. This is the link to the Dept of Revenue on obtaining registration:

Have recently moved to Denver area and have an older 1986 sports car. We failed the emissions testing and was wondering if there is another way to get it to pass since it is an oder vehicle.

Not sure what you mean by another way....they usually tell you why it didn't pass and what you need to do to fix it so it will pass. You have a certain amount of time, from what I remember, to get it fixed and retested so you don't have to pay for the test again.

Well it didn't pass because it was not up to the emissions standard. I meant is there some type of exclusion that could be made for an older vehicle. It is not blowing out black smoke as some of the cars that I see driving by. The vehicle is 22 years old which makes it a bit harder to adjust.

According to this web page on the Air Care Colorado site, it looks like the answer is no. It's the 1981 and older vehicles that seem to have different tests.
