There's better places than Denver to take vacation in December. Check out San Diego, while you're at it check out Phoenix.

Agree - unless you want to do Christmas stuff like the Parade of Lights, hot chocolate, and more lights at Botanic Gardens and the Zoo, (where you'll be cold because it's at night) Denver is not that spectacular in December, that and November are the down months. Short days, unpredictable weather, and the ski season isn't in full swing either.

San Diego would be a great break.

If you like cold or snow, choose Denver if not I'd go with San Diego. The past couple of years we have had our cold snaps in December.. I live in suburban Denver and it down to about -13 at my home and had highs around 0 for a couple days. Interestingly January was warmer. However if dressed for the weather it's not unbearable. Enjoy

Austin is amazing! If you love live music, go there!

I would like to be able to do everything downtown and possibly walk. I would also like to see some nice Christmas lights downtown. Does it snow pretty heavy in December? How cold does it get? What kind of clothes should I pack? Does Denver sound like a good place for me?

Thanks in advance for the help!
The primary attraction of Denver for a visitor on vacation is it serves as a starting/stopping point for excursions into the mountains. In winter that usually means skiing and other activities at ski resorts in the mountains. That's what makes Denver unique; not urban activities. If all you want to do is urban stuff, stay downtown the entire time with no car, and you're not planning on going to the mountains, unless if you're from a small town in Wyoming or Nebraska where Denver is "the big city" there are many better choices of places to visit for fun. For the stuff you mentioned you want to do I would visit NYC, Chicago, Boston, or San Francisco. Denver has plenty of bars but the club scene and live music scene is weak. I wouldn't come here for the shopping either. The biggest shopping hub is not located downtown but is rather in Cherry Creek North and a few other corridors.

In other words, Denver is a good place to live but a boring place to visit.

Yes, Denver is beautiful during the Christmas holidays, but, even though we lived south of Denver (Englewood and Parker) for 5 1/2 years and will be returning at retirement time, I'd still pick San Diego.

For certain tourists, there are certain activities that can be done (legally) in Denver that cannot be done (legally) in many other US cities.

This and I'd disagree with the poster above who does not care for Denver's music scene. I grew up in Nashville, TN and lived my whole life there up until a few months ago. While I'm only 23, I've seen thousands of concerts and I see Denver as moving up in terms of a scene. Proportionally, Denver may not beat Nashville, but taking population of both cities out of it, I find that Denver has a better scene. While Nashville competes with Atlanta and Asheville for the styles of music that I enjoy, Denver only really seems to compete with the rest of the front range and a few small mountain towns. The nearest metros with music would be Kansas City or Salt Lake City, both about 500 miles away.

I do think though in some ways that Denver is less exciting to visit than to live in. I say this because much of what I enjoy so far about living here involves gear or equipment and things like that become more complicated/inconvenient when traveling from elsewhere. I visited about a half dozen times over the course of 2-3 years before I moved to Denver and there is definitely a difference between vacationing here for a week and living here day to day.

Denver may or may not be snowy in December. You never know. Could be 40 and sunny, or get a foot of snow. Downtown is very nice during Christmas. There are plenty of bars and clubs downtown and you could have a lot of fun. But if you didn't also want to get some skiing in, I'd honestly go to San Diego. It's a great city, especially if you can stay downtown. You can always come to Denver during the summer or fall for a better time to be here IMO.
