I don't buy that at all. Look at the variety of local businesses in most downtowns compared to the suburbs. Night and day. There are too damn many Starbucks though.

Actually, many strip malls contain lots of small local businesses. I'm not a huge fan of their form, but that's a different issue. And yeah, most of the downtowns have the same businesses one would see at the local mall.
