I have driven to the top of Mt. Evans twice. Once long ago when I was fairly new as a Colorado resident, and it was freaky scary. Then, a couple of years ago after living here for 35+ years. I was in my nice new Subaru Outback, and I'm not unused to mountain driving after all these years here. It was *still* freaky scary.

I'm proud of myself for doing it but I totally don't want to do it again. I would not recommend it to anyone who's the least apprehensive about mountain driving.

The cog railway at Pikes Peak? Now that's something that - I hate to admit - I've always wanted to do and haven't gotten around to yet.

I second the advice about taking it easy with the altitude adjustment. And drinking a lot of water. Also, alcohol can hit quicker and harder than at lower elevations so if you drink, take it easy till you see how you do.

Also, when I moved here from Houston I had a few months of freaky dry skin etc. and then it seemed like my bod adjusted and went back to "normal."

Welcome to Colorado. I liked it enough to stick around all this time, and I still do. Best wishes on your move and on your folks' vacation!

Honestly if you're looking for a nice mountain drive, head up to the top of Guanella Pass. Instead of following the conga line to the top of Mt. Bierstadt set off on the other side of the road and hike up to Square Top Lakes (or if you're in good shape, have plenty of water, are properly equipped, and are feeling brave try to summit 13er Square Top Mountain - chances are you'll have it to yourself).

ETA: If you decide to go up Guanella Pass, try to go during the week. The lots overflow on the weekend with hikers going up Bierstadt.

Closer to Parker there's Castlewood Canyon
