There is an area of Lafayette designated as an old town, but I do not think it is along the lines of an old town that you see in other areas. I'm a southern-town boy (I've always lived in the southern area of Denver) so I'm not as familiar with the towns as far as living there, but I think again it's really what you are looking for. Lafayette, Superior, and Erie were all small towns that have grown exponentially in the last decade or so. A lot of what you'll find there are newer developments, so if that's what you're looking for those are the towns to consider. Boulder is nice, but expensive in comparison, and it is a college town (if that matters to you). I think most any of those towns, though, you will find to be family-friendly, and all have good schools and low crime.

In May 2006, Louisville, CO was rated number 1 as the best place to raise a family in Bert Sperling and Peter Sander, authors of Best Places to Raise Your Family: The Top 100 Affordable Communities in the U.S., Frommer's, $24.99.

In addition, any town in Boulder County has great bus service to Boulder. That would include Louisville, Lafayette, Superior and Longmont. Also Broomfield which was in Boulder County but now is Broomfield County has great bus service to Boulder. Broomfield is a very good family oriented town. Boulder is very expensive and these other towns offer better housing costs.

I live in Arvada (Jefferson County). It is a conservative town and good for children with good school system. Housing prices are more reasonable than Boulder and Louisville. Good location for Denver and Boulder.

I hope this helps.

thank you everyone for you comments. This really helps. We live
in the beautiful city of Los Angeles (joking, of course)...and I can't really say that I absolutely love anything about where we live now (except the fact that we are somewhat near grandparents).
I would change the commuting, long hours, stress, expense of living in California. We own a home and are probably putting it on the market April 1. We decided it was a good time for my husband to go back to school and slow things down a bit.
Therefore, we are looking for nice family neighborhoods, walking distance to parks, shops, etc. good schools (which we aren't near now) and low crime. My husband and I were born and raised in Southern California, we did our graduate degrees in Chicago and moved back to CA after our second child. Now, we're ready to leave again! We drive 40 minutes one way to our children's school. My brother recently moved out to Denver and has been trying to recruit us. We visiting in December and we can't wait.
