It's essentially a city that was never designed to sustain the population that it currently has. Some "main" arteries are narrow and have no room for expansion (Yale, Evans). The east side metro is disconnected with the west side of the metro, particularly the central part of it. The east side of the metro, which is becoming more and more populated as the metro bursts at the seems, is also vastly under-served by highways and avenues with higher speed limits and fewer stop lights. The west side has three: I-70, Hwy 6, and 285.

I had a class mate from CSM who moved to Utah because the I70 traffic to the slopes was so out of control ...

As much as I can agree it IS bad, you can still easily out smart it. If you leave Denver by 530 AM you won't have more than a 5-10 min delay (on the worst days). Just get past the tunnel, pull off, get some breakfast/coffee, relax, and still get a good parking spot.

He must not have been a 5:30 am guy, I don't know many that are.

The electronic sign on 25 Northbound from Parker to Denver said Colorado is up to 535 traffic deaths this year. Great god.

I remember going to work a few days after new years and it was already in double digits

I probably see 3-4 near accidents on I-25 every day between my commute to and from Parker to Downtown.

As the previous posters have said, it really is all about where your from and have spent most of your time.

Growing up in NJ outside of NYC, to me Denver isn't very populated, doesn't have much traffic and rent isn't that high

But that's because all those things are outrageous in NJ/NYC.

And to be clear traffic NEVER stops dead here, it may slow down but it always moves..even if slowly, and that's fine with me during rush hour!

I-225 is a breeze. It's one of the smoothest-sailing highways I've traveled on in Denver Metro besides E-470, which is a toll road. I-25 and I-70 are terrible, for the most part. I-25 was expanded down south near Lone Tree, and it's pretty good until you get to DTC. I-70 is supposed to be completely overhauled through Denver, and is to be made into a ground level, and below ground highway. I believe that is still the plan.
