My husband will be starting a new job in Denver soon. He will office at the Denver Tech Center, which is in the southern part of Denver. We lived in Dallas/Lakewood for 11 years and made the jump to the Dallas suburb of Southlake about 2 years ago. We love Southlake! For those of you from Dallas, what suburb of Denver would you say is most similar to Southlake? Excellent schools, strong community feel, trees, lots of shopping, restaurants, etc. We did the city-living thing for 11 years but its not for us anymore. Our kids are now 5, 8 and 10 and excellent schools, family-friendly community are whats most important to us right now. I do not want to move to a super-sized concrete suburb of Denver like the Frisco/Plano of Dallas. I'm looking for the Denver suburbs similar to Southlake, Coppell and Flower Mound. A southern Denver suburb with a population around 20,000-40,000. We're looking to buy a home between $700,000-$900,000. Thank you!

Thanks davebarnes. Are you familiar with both Dallas and Denver? What are your thoughts on Highlands Ranch? Is that similar to the Plano/Frisco/McKinney area of Dallas? What Dallas suburb would you compare Highlands Ranch to?

Highlands Ranch is pretty much the same as Plano / Frisco. Lone tree makes sense.

We're from HP and people told us the same about Lone Tree being a similar fit. I'm not sure if that helps any. We ended up going with Boulder.

Do you commute to the Denver Tech Center from Boulder?

Start looking in Greenwood Village, Centennial, southern Aurora, Parker, Lone Tree, and Highlands Ranch. See which community fits for you and your family. Then narrow your search to properties in those communities. You will have your pick of above average housing.

My advice was bad.
Lone Tree is too small.

Aurora - 353,000
Centennial 100,000
Greenwood Village - 14,000
Highlands Ranch - 101.000
Lone Tree - 13.500-
Parker - 50,000

Nothing meets your population criterion.

I think you're going to have to throw out the population requirement. Tree-wise there's nothing like the Cross Timbers on the east side of the Denver Metro Area, but there are some in areas like Tallyn's Reach and The Pinery.

Tallyn's Reach
+Easier commute to the Tech Center
+Cherry Creek Schools
+Shopping @ Southlands
-Main artery is an overpriced toll road. Coming from DFW where nearly every damn road has a toll component this won't be as big of a deal.

The Pinery
More trees
Smaller population
-Longer commute
-Not as close to shopping
-Douglas County Schools

Thank you everyone. This has been very helpful -- we're taking a last minute trip to Denver this weekend. Perhaps I will throw out the population criteria. In Dallas the school districts seem to be divided by the city/suburb with only 1 or 2 high schools in the district (I prefer the districts with 1 high school), but I get the feeling thats different in the Denver area. It feels as though 2-3 cities might feed into a district. Thank you.
