Do any public school districts do this? Seems odd.

In any case, several private schools run their own bus routes.

Yes, in Pittsburgh where I live and in Long Island, NY. If an K-5 child lives more than a mile and still within that school district that school district will still provide busing.

Now, if this is not an option and the private school doesn't have bus what do people do? I have to assume not everyone has a nanny and if they do, not every nanny drives.

People provide their own transportation. Some schools have before/after school care so parents can drop off their kids on the way to/from work.

I live in Denver and my kid attends a public charter middle school. They do have buses but we live .2 miles too close so I have to provide my own transportation. Luckily, the kiddo's school is in between our house and my office, and while I have to juggle my schedule a bit, I make it work.

I grew up on Long Island and never heard of a public school providing a bus for the private schools. Heck, several years, we were on an austerity budget and they cut out the buses completely and we had to carpool, plus I had after school activities almost every day and there was no late bus so I had to get a ride or walk.

Our school system in suburban Baltimore did the same thing.

Wow, using public school transportation dollars to transport kids to private school. I'm amazed. No way that would fly around here.

When I was in 7th grade in 1961, the Catholic kids got bussed (in public school buses) to an offsite religious education class every week.

My daughter attends private school. They have their own bus system, but a lot of parents drive their kids in the morning before work.
