Hello!
My husband and I live in Parker, CO and own a house. I've decided to go back to school, and the program I'm interested in is located in Arvada, CO. The commute would be about 37 miles and about 1 hour ONE WAY. I need some advice on what to do for housing! We don't really want to sell since the program is only 5 semesters. So, the ideas I've come up with are:

1. We both stay living in the house and I commute my life away lol

2. He stays in the house and we rent a room to supplement the mortgage, and I rent an apt in the Arvada area

3. We both go up to an apt in Arvada and rent our entire house - this would require our things going into storage since we have a 3 bedroom house and will probably only rent a 1 bedroom. He has the opportunity to keep the same job and work from home.

What other creative ideas are there? I'm not particularly talented in the conceptual thinking or brainstorming avenue. Have any of you had this situation come up? What's it like to rent your house? Or to share it with someone?

Thank you!

For only five semesters, I'd cope with the commute. All the other options you proposed sound like too much of a headache, not to mention, an unnecessary expense.

Try to schedule your classes to minimize the number of days you need to be on campus.

Look into airbnb to stay in Arvada 2 or 3 nights a week - you can get a room for as little as $15 per night it seems, and then go back home for the weekend.

1 hour commute is not all that terrible, people do that every day for work. I would just suck it up personally, the hassles involved with all of the other options seem to suck quite a bit.

Suck it up and learn to enjoy the drive!

My girlfriend commutes 40 mins from Lakewood to Aurora, I still see her smile here and there!

Have you looked into online education programs? It is pretty amazing the number of ways one can obtain an education, and degrees and certifications, via online schools.

Seems like a lot of money and stress on the relationship to move or get an additional apartment when the commute is completely average.

Just buck it up and commute... I did something similar for three months from NW Jefferson County to the south side of the DTC. Get yourself an Audible.com (or something like that) and start listening to books. Amazing how it helps shorten that drive everyday.

An hour one way is a pretty typical commute in any major city, what exactly is the objection? I'd just commute. I don't see an hour each way as a big deal though.
