I am in the final stages of interviewing for a job downtown Denver and if it works out we will be moving to Denver from Chicago suburbs and looking to rent a small home with a yard(we have a dog). Ideally I would like a 30 min commute, rail or car. Which neighborhoods should I focus on? And is it feasible to drive downtown, or is it parking prohibitive the same as Chicago downtown?

And, the all important question— what is your budget?

I was thinking of max $2000. We don't have kids, so even a 1 bdr appt would do, but we would like a yard for the dog so that's why I said a small home. We don't care about bars and stuff like that, we don't get out much, and when we do we prefer going outdoors.

I'd focus on something within walking distance of an RTD stop just outside of Denver city/county limits. You'll probably have the best luck looking someplace off the W line in Lakewood or the C/D lines in Englewood and Littleton.

Parking downtown is a major PITA. I would never consider a job there unless the employer provides a reserved parking spot. If nothing is provided, I'd start looking at nearby garages that you can buy passes to and see if it's worth it when you factor that into your budget- and make sure there is something close enough that you can buy a pass to in the first place. You definitely don't want to just be looking for random parking every morning.

I can't imagine any light rail commute being 30 minutes or less unless you are literally right outside the city, live right next to the station, and your work location is right next to the station on the other end. Then you'll also need to factor in the cost of a monthly RTD pass, and some of the RTD stations charge for parking. If you're within walking distance to the station, consider how you'll feel about doing that walk in snow/ice in the winter.

Check out Arvada! It would fit your commute criteria and you should be able to find something within your budget.

What commute time would you prefer? How many minutes? How far away from the city center?
