My family plan on relocating to Denver, however there are lots of people at my work continue to give me a hard time. They keep telling me how I am going to freeze my butt off, that it gets real cold there, and that Denver gets lots of blizzards. I keep telling them that Flagstaff gets colder, but they wont listen. So I was wondering if anyone knew if what I am telling people is true. It does not matter to me if it is cold, I know that is something I will have to get used to. I was just wondering so I can rub it in there noses if they are wrong.

thanks

If you are debating between Denver or Flagstaff Arizona, I would with out a doubt choose Denver. My wife and I live in Flagstaff. We moved here back in October and have hated it ever since. We are planning on moving to the Denver area this summer "hopefully." Flagstaff's cost of living far exceeds Denver's. There really isn't much in the city of Flagstaff to do. The city itself is very trashy. There is a saying in Flagstaff that desribes the town very well. "Flagstaff is poverty with a view." The weather isn't really that great either. Sure, we have alot of sunny days but it's snows alot during the winter. We've had over 95 inches so far this winter. That is much more than what the Denver area gets. The city of Flagstaff really isn't growing much. City officials and people living in town won't allow the city to grow much in terms of commercial stores.

Plus if it's the outdoors and mountains that you're looking for, I'd still go to Denver. Yeah, Flagstaff is built in the mountains and Denver is at the base of mountains but there are so much more beautiful mountains around Denver than Flagstaff. Sure Flagstaff has the San Fransico Peaks but Denver has Mt. Evans, plus Rocky Mountain National Park which far exceed the Peaks near Flagstaff. If you have any other questions regarding the two areas feel free to send me a private message on here.

Yeah, my husband grew up in Flagstaff, and we have visited several times. I agree there is absolutley nothing to do. I grew up in Phx Az, I was wondering which of the two places get colder. Cause like I said, there are several people at work who continue to give me a hard time about how cold it is. I keep telling them that Flagstaff gets colder. But they don't seem to believe me. So I was just wanting to know if I am crazy or does Denver really do get colder. It does not matter to me, we are moving regardless. I just want to throw it back in my friends faces at work, that I really am right. HEHEHE

Thanks for you comment, it does help.

Honestly, from living in Flagstaff and visiting Denver. I would say that on average Flagstaff would be colder than Denver. During the winter season in Flagstaff the high temps usually average between the upper 20s to if you're lucky lower 40s. Denver on the other hand receives what are called Chinook Winds. These are winds that occur often during the winter months. They winds often raise the daily highs up into the 60s and sometimes 70s when they occur. The Chinook winds can last anywhere from a couple of hours to a couple of days.

And for the summer months, Flagstaff usually stays cooler than Denver. The average highs for Flagstaff are low to upper 80s with an occasional lower 90s (but usually less than 7 days a year). Denver's summers tend to get up into the low to mid 90s and recently have even been around and just above 100.

Both places receive nearly 300 days a year of sunshine, which helps make both areas feel much warmer than what it is. I would still without a doubt pick Denver over Flagstaff any day. Flagstaff to us is a trashy city and doesn't have much to offer. I think that the people you work with haven't ever really spend much time in either Denver or Flagstaff (espically during the winter). Well, I hope this has helped. When are you guys moving to the Denver area? We are hoping to be out there for good this summer. We're actually flying out for 5 days at the end of May.

Thanks a whole lot. That does help. We are not sure when we are going to move. Right now we are in getting the house ready for sale. And when it sells then I am putting in for a transfer to Denver with my work. Thats the one good thing, atleast I will have a job. It all depends on how long it takes to sell the house, and how long the transfer take. But we are planning on visiting in June. I just can't take the heat down here anymore. I have been here 24 years, and I am so ready to move.

Sorry, can't fix the spacing easily. Denver is significantly warmer in the summer than Flagstaff, slightly warmer in winter. The large annual differences are due to the larger summer differences, the winter is only 2-3 F warmer in Denver.

Last edited by nelumbo; 03-25-2008 at 04:20 PM.. Reason: stupid spacing

Glad to help. We are looking forward to our move to the Denver area. We are looking at the NW Metro area. Around Broomfield/Superior. It is such a beautiful area, has great views of the Front Range part of the Rockies and is only about 10-15 miles to the mountains (depending on what part of town you're in). There are also some very nice apartment complexes in that area if you two are looking at renting for a while. The area is really nice. It's half way between Boulder and Denver (about 15-20 minutes). There is also some great shopping in the Broomfield/Superior area. There is a nice mall there called Flatiron Crossing, plus the Pearl Street Mall in Boulder and the new Twenty Ninth Street Mall in Boulder. Have you two decided on an area of the Metro to move to?

I don't blame you on hating the heat in the Valley. We didn't care much for it either when we lived there. The winters in the Valley are nice but the summers are terrible. We hope that you enjoy your trip in June. We're taking one at the end of May. If you have any other questions feel free to ask.
