The performing arts scene is one of our favorite things about this area. When we moved here, we marveled at all the DCPA offered in one setting, that the area was safe, and had a variety of restaurants within walking distance. We have season tickets for the big shows and often frequent the smaller theaters. In addition, there are so many smaller venues in the area that offer quality entertainment. The Aurora Fox has excellent productions, as does Arvada, Lone Tree, Parker, and many black box-type theaters. It's a great scene.

There are things some of those cities have more of than Denver, but also things that each of them have less of. Phoenix really has less of everything except people.

Portland is the only city on that list that can rival Denver’s beer scene.

Portland and Austin have less in the way of sports and live theatre. The museums in Denver are superior to both as well. Austin may be the capital of Texas but it is much smaller than Houston and Dallas so doesn’t get all the culture for the region.

Chicago is a great city no doubt. Couldn’t take the winters though. Traffic there is in a completely different league than here.

I love San Francisco as well, but if you think Denver is expensive.....

Philly is awesome, but since it is so close to NYC, it isn’t the regional cultural hub that Denver is.

Houston is definitely a huge city, but doesn’t even have 1 of the Big 4 professional sports. It also doesn’t have the market on live music for its state, let alone the region. You need to go to austin for that.

Dallas is just a very different vibe than Denver when it comes to the people and the culture. That’s a plus or a minus for some.

As for size, all of the cities on your list with the exception of Austin and Portland have metropolitan area populations significantly larger than Denver’s.

Austin is smaller but hard to argue it isn't the cultural center of the state.

Houston and Dallas are suburban sprawl and chain-everything. Both cities pretend they are centers of urban influence but really both cities mostly focus on being poor emulations of LA or Chicago. Whatever was hot in either city five or ten years ago just hit Houston and Dallas. Due to their size they have plenty of museums and performance arts but none of it carries the reputation of comparable cities.

Fort Worth is a caricature of cowboy life but it's really just an oversized suburb glued to Dallas.

Austin is definitely the focus of cultural influence in Texas. Businesses start in Austin and radiate out to the other large cities. Austin trends flow to the rest of the state when college students graduate and move for jobs. It has a cultural identity that isn't a caricature, even if it is a little full of itself.

I was specifically referring to the offerings of live theater and museums. Houston and Dallas have more to offer in those spaces. Agree with you on the other points.

If you're into Rap, Hip/Hop and the underground stuff, Houston has a really good music venue for that.

I'm confused...what do you consider the "Big 4 professional sports"? Texans? Rockets? Astros?

Seriously? It’s not what i consider. It’s what is universally recognized (but not by you apparently).

The major professional sports leagues in the United States and Canada are the highest professional competitions of team sports in those countries. The four leagues universally included in the definition are Major League Baseball (MLB), the National Basketball Association (NBA), the National Football League (NFL), and the National Hockey League (NHL).

Know that "nicer weather" is completely subjective. I find Denver's weather almost ideal save for the heat in August. The cities mentioned are mostly either too hot or too humid or both.
