You learn pretty quickly that the view is way better than a tree canopy. We are a different climate than northern Cali.

OP, think Tahoe for weather, if you have spent time there. Nearly the same lack of humidity and elevation.

I too appreciate a city's tree canopy, especially for cities in the interior west and southwest--the sun is so intense without trees for shade.

But, Mother nature is pretty cruel to planted trees along the front range; broken branches in leaf from heavy snow, hail, sudden temperature changes, heavy clay soil that doesn't breathe, and intense sunshine that damages tree trunks.

Imagine what metro Denver would have looked like if Dutch Elm disease had never hit? The city would have been much more lush and shaded. Very sad.

denver is a highlands desert
to that ends if you want tall trees you need to water. Denver Water has a good product but it is expensive. Citizens can maybe afford the $200/mo to keep a lawn and trees green for everyone. You go a few miles out east say near DIA and all you see is rolling hills and grass. Likely that is what is native to Denver. No trees

-weather here can carry, a lot. Lots of false starts in spring, than a week or two more of winter.
-an urban environment tends to stress growth
-enver city policies don't exactly promote tree lined residential streets. The new side walk policy is will de nude some blocks of old growth.

Well that's good since Tahoe is my absolute favorite place in CA!

Denver's Koppen classification is BSk (cold, semi-arid). Not desert.

Is that the same classification for Salt Lake City and Reno too?
